The All-Star outfielder lost out on the first Gold Glove award of his career to Boston Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela

Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez has been one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball since his debut in 2022.

Rodriguez, who's been named an All-Star in three of his four seasons in the major leagues and has won two Silver Slugger awards, was named a finalist for an American League Gold Glove award in the center field position.

The winners of the awards were announced Sunday and Rodriguez was passed over for the first Gold Glove award of his career.

Boston Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela earned the Gold Glove award over Rodriguez and Kansas City Royals outfielder Kyle Isbel.

Rodriguez had a .991 fielding percentage in 441 total chances across 1,406.1 innings and 149 games.

Rafaela had .985 fielding percentage in 332 total chances across 1,167.1 innings and 141 games.

Rafaela had 21 outs above average this season, which ranked in the 99th percentile of baseball according to Baseball Savant. He had 20 defensive runs saved, which was most in the majors among center fielders this season.

Rodriguez had 11 outs above average, which ranked in the 97th percentile in baseball. He had nine defensive runs saved, which was tied four fourth in the American League and seventh in the majors among major leaguers.

Rodriguez will have to wait at least another year before his first career Gold Glove, but he'll have an opportunity to win his third career Silver Slugger award.

Rodriguez is one of the AL's finalists for the Silver Slugger along with the New York Yankees' Cody Bellinger, Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins and Houston Astros, Riley Greene of the Detroit Tigers, Aaron Judge of the Yankees and George Springer of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rodriguez scored 106 runs in 160 games and hit 31 doubles, four triples and 32 home runs with 95 RBIs this season. He slashed .267/.324/.474 with a .798 OPS.
