Hamstring surgery will sideline Conine for 6-8 weeks, a major blow as the Marlins battle mounting outfield injuries.
After being placed on the 10-day injured list, Griffin Conine will reportedly undergo surgery next week for his torn hamstring.
The timeline for recovery is expected to last six to eight weeks. He may be moved to the 60-day Injured List in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster.
The Miami Marlins' outfielder suffered a left hamstring tear diving for a line drive to left field during Thursday’s 8-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He left the game with what was initially considered discomfort.
It’s an unfortunate loss for the Marlins, who are already dealing with a rash of injuries in the outfield. Conine was batting .273 in 22 at-bats this season before the injury. He recently hit a solo home run during Wednesday’s victory over the Reds.
“Griff has impact potential in his bat,” Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said after the game. “When he squares it up, he does, he has the ability to do some damage.”
Early-season injuries have plagued Conine's first years in the big leagues. He was slashing .281/.352/.438 through 20 games last season before he suffered a left shoulder injury April 19, 2025. He remained out until Sept. 23, 2025, when he hit a solo home run against the Philadelphia Phillies.
In 183 career at-bats dating back to his MLB debut on Aug. 26, 2024, he has batted .262 with a .779 OPS, seven home runs and 24 RBI. There’s clearly enough of a sample size to prove that as long as he is on the field, he will be a productive bat for the Marlins.
“I need to stay on the field more,” Conine said. “I’ve proven that I’m gonna be good out there.”
The Marlins lost Conine just as they are close to having Kyle Stowers return from his an injury he suffered in spring training. The star outfielder, who is coming off an All-Star season in which he hit 25 home runs, 73 RBI, and slashed .288/.368/.544 in 117 games, started his minor league rehab assignment on Friday in Triple-A Jacksonville.
The Marlins also lost outfielder Esteury Ruiz to a high-grade left oblique strain around the same time as Stowers got injured in spring training. He is in the Marlins' spring training facility in Jupiter, Florida, working on baseball activities before he starts his rehab assignment.
The Marlins traded for Ruiz over the offseason with the expectation of utilizing his speed at the top of the lineup, especially after stealing 63 bases in the minors last year, 83 bases in 2022, and 67 bases in his only full MLB season in 2023. He is expected to make his Marlins debut in late May.
Christopher Morel, another Marlins offseason acquisition who was sidelined before making his debut, is also in Jupiter rehabbing an oblique strain. The first baseman was placed on the IL just before the start of opening day. His initial timeline is 4-6 weeks and he is expected to return sometime between late April and early May.
