Phillies' Latest $140 Million Prediction is Beyond Alarming
Nov 4, 2026 2:55 PM

The Philadelphia Phillies have received a rather alarming $140 million projection this MLB offseason.

The Philadelphia Phillies are on the hunt for bat this winter, especially in their outfield.

The Phillies had some of the worst outfield production in baseball this past year, so they definitely need to bolster that group.

Luckily for Philadelphia, there are quite a few intriguing outfield bats available, and the one that has been most linked to the Phillies is Randy Arozarena.

Arozarena slashed .281/.381/.484 with 26 home runs and 79 RBI over 670 plate appearances with the Seattle Mariners in 2026, marking the best season of his career.

The three-time All-Star is expected to get paid handsomely as a result, and Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly does think he will ultimately land in Philadelphia.

However, Kelly is projecting Arozarena to secure a five-year, $140 million contract, which would put him at $28 million annually.

That's a whole lot of money for Arozarena, who turns 32 in February, is a subpar defender and four straight sub-.800 OPS campaigns before his breakout this past season.

Arozarena is unquestionably a good hitter. He owns a solid lifetime .792 OPS, and he has a good playoff track record. But is he worth that type of money and such a long deal?

The Phillies already have a bunch of poorly aging contracts on their payroll. They have to be very careful not to add another, and while Philadelphia is in win-now mode and must improve if it wants to have any chance of a World Series run in 2027, $140 million for Arozarena is an incredibly steep price.

That's especially considering a salary cap seems imminent (although we still don't know exactly how that will work).

I'm all for the Phils making a strong push for Arozarena. They need another power bat alongside of Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, and Arozarena might see an uptick in production in hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park.

I'm just not so sure that it would require such a hefty pay day.

Arozarena's projections started around four years and $80-100 million near the end of the regular season, which is still a lot, but certainly not as intimidating as 5/140.

Age is a significant issue here. Arozarena would be 36 turning 37 at the end of that contract, and we can't be positive just how much longer he will remain that productive.

For example, base-stealing is also a big part of Arozarena's game, as he swiped 26 bags this past season and stole 31 the year prior. You have to figure that number will decrease the older he gets.

I like Arozarena a whole lot, but $28 million AAV over five seasons sounds like overkill.
