The Phillies need to save themselves in this situation.
As the Philadelphia Phillies prepare for the upcoming offseason, the front office will have to address some issues across the roster.
After another early playoff exit, the Phillies are back to square one, with the team trying to figure out how to get over the hump in the National League. Philadelphia still has a nice collection of talent on the roster, but this group needs some new blood.
The Phillies have never been shy about making splash additions in the past, and in all likelihood, it won't change this winter. Philadelphia has to do something to bolster the roster, and this could mean the front office going into free agency again.
But the Phillies need to avoid making one signing that could be costly for the team in the long run. This would be the team going after free agent outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. of the New York Yankees.
Chisholm isn't expected to return to the Yankees this offseason, and the Phillies have been a team linked to him. While Chisholm is a good player, the team should avoid going after him due to inconsistency, his attitude, and the expected long-term deal he will want.
Over his career, Chisholm has done well, making a few All-Star teams in the process. But there is a reason why the Yankees don't necessarily want him back.
Chisholm had an underwhelming season for the Yankees this year, hitting .231 with 19 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 41 stolen bases, while posting an OPS of .711. The outfielder did make an impact this year, but overall, it wasn't the type of season that he or the team needed from him at the plate.
The veteran has also seen his share of attitude issues, with the Yankees taking the brunt of it at times. Chisholm has looked disinterested at times as well, and this isn't the type of player that a team like the Phillies should be paying heavily.
Philadelphia has already paid multiple players on long-term deals, and some of them haven't worked out well. Chisholm could provide a decent spark to the team, but overall, the risks outweigh the reward for the Phillies.
If Chisholm is willing to take a short-term deal, the Phillies could be a good landing spot for him to sign. But that won't happen, with most people expecting him to receive at least a five-year contract.
Philadelphia needs to pass on Chisholm, despite the intrigue that does come from the veteran outfielder.
