The Philadelphia Phillies could end up targeting a polarizing $61 million outfielder in MLB free agency.

The Philadelphia Phillies have a dire need for outfield help heading into the MLB offseason, but unfortunately, the pickings are rather slim.

Outside of Seiya Suzuki and Randy Arozarena, there aren't many enticing options in free agency, and both of those players have their fair share of drawbacks.

The Phillies could always pursue a trade, but they don't exactly have a ton of capital to move in potential deals.

Taking that into consideration, Philadelphia might be stuck scouring the free-agent market, and Tim Kelly of On Pattison has identified whom he feels might actually be the best option for the club: Ian Happ.

Happ just finished the final season of a three-year, $61 million extension he had signed with the Chicago Cubs and is slated to be one of the best defensive outfielders available.

His bat, on the other hand, is a major question mark.

Happ slashed .218/.326/.412 with 24 home runs and 68 RBI over 636 plate appearances this past year, good for a career-worst .738 OPS.

The former first-round pick has generally been consistent with his power, having posted four straight seasons of over 20 homers, and he maxed out at 25. But his overall production has declined each of the past three campaigns.

Now 32 years old, it's very likely that Happ is on the downside of his career, and you have to wonder if a defensive dropoff will follow his decreasing offense.

Happ posted 10 defensive runs saved in 2026, which was actually the second-best mark of his career. He also captured four straight Gold Glove awards between 2022 and 2025. But there is no question that his age is concerning.

Pattison likes Happ over Suzuki and Arozarena because of his glove, but really, the Phillies need bats more than anything else. Plus, Dave Dombrowski has never been one to value defense that heavily.

And to be quite frank, I would rather gamble on the big bat with shaky defense rather than the declining bat whose defense could be next.

Happ won't get paid as much as Suzuki or Arozarena in free agency, which is something to keep in mind. If Philadelphia feels that the latter two are too expensive, then perhaps it will turn to Happ. But I'm just not sure that's a wise idea in general.

The switch-hitting Happ owns a lifetime 12.2 percent walk rate, which is impressive. But his xBA of .208 and xSLG of .390 in 2026 are major concerns that I don't necessarily see improving.
