The Texas Rangers saw Sebastian Walcott and Casey Cook in action for the Surprise Saguaros during Wednesday's Arizona Fall League action.
On Wednesday, the Arizona Fall League was back in action, and the Surprise Saguaros made the most of it.
Surprise pulled out a one-run victory, beating the Javelinas 9-8 to secure their fifth win of the season. With the win, the Saguaros record improves to 5-3 on the year.
The Texas Rangers were at the forefront of the action despite not having a pitcher throw in the game.
Rangers top prospect Sebastian Walcott and left-field prospect Casey Cook both got starts for Surprise.
Strong day for Rangers' Cook
Despite much of the attention being on Walcott any time he’s in the lineup, it was actually Cook who had the big day.
Cook went 1-for-2 with a hit and a pair of walks, as well as a run scored while hitting at the top of the order and playing left field.
In his first at-bat, Cook led off the game by working a six-pitch walk in which he didn’t take a hack at a single pitch in the plate appearance.
Just innings later in the third, Cook once again worked a six-pitch at-bat but this time struck out swinging.
In the fifth, Cook ripped the fifth pitch of his at-bat for a single, which came off the bat at 101.7 mph.
Cook walked on four pitches in the sixth, including an ABS challenge that saw him overturn at called strike to a ball on the second pitch. In his final at-bat of the game in the eighth, Cook was hit by a pitch.
Walcott back in action
As for Walcott, it was a tough day, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, a walk, and a run scored. The Texas top prospect also stole a base.
It was also a significant day for Walcott because he got the start at shortstop. Of course, he missed much of the minor league season this year while recovering from elbow surgery.
The plan is for Walcott to play two or three times per week in the Fall League while working to get his feet back underneath him.
It’ll be worth watching the next few days to see which Rangers pitchers find some action in the Fall League.
Texas has five pitchers on the Surprise roster and four position players to make a total of nine players. Each of them has seen significant time during the early stages of the Fall League.
There is now less than a month until the Fall League’s Championship game.
