Ahead of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Yankees, the Boston Red Sox made two roster moves, adding some fresh arms to their bullpen. They announced that setup man Garrett Whitlock was activated from the injured list and left-handed reliever Raymond Burgos was appointed the 27th man. 

Whitlock first landed on the injured list ahead of Boston's 7-0 win in Toronto on Aug. 13 with right elbow inflammation. After being placed on the IL, the 30-year-old told reporters he wasn't concerned about the injury; however, precautionary imaging confirmed the inflammation. 

Whitlock has been Boston’s main setup man ahead of All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman in 2026. In 44 innings pitched, Whitlock has posted a 2.05 ERA, holding opponents to a .203 batting average. 

Despite losing a pair of key setup men in Whitlock and Justin Slaten, who landed on the injured list with right elbow inflammation on Aug. 16, the Red Sox bullpen hasn't skipped a beat, posting a 1.33 ERA in 44 innings pitched, the second-best mark in baseball.

To make room on the roster for Whitlock, right-hander Wyatt Olds was optioned to Triple-A Worcester. 

The 27-year-old right-hander performed well in his first taste of big league action. Olds allowed three runs, all unearned, on four hits, striking out eight and walking three across six innings of work after being promoted from Worcester on Aug. 17. He’ll now head back to Worcester to await his next opportunity at the major league level. 

The 27-year-old left-hander returns to the Red Sox clubhouse for his third stint in the big leagues in 2026 after being optioned to Worcester in favor of Olds. In three big league appearances, Burgos has done well to save the taxed Red Sox bullpen, being used primarily in a mop-up role. He’s allowed three earned runs on four hits, while covering 10 innings across three appearances in the majors. 

Since being optioned back to Worcester, Burgos has made one start, a five-inning shutout effort on Aug. 23 in which he allowed only four hits while walking three and striking out four. 

It’ll likely be another brief stint at the big league level for the lefty as he’ll serve as the 27th man for the doubleheader. 

After a day off on Friday night, injured Red Sox hitters Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are back in the lineup for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday. Interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters, including MLB.com's Ian Browne, that the earliest Anthony and/or Story would rejoin the Red Sox lineup would be Sunday's series finale from Yankee Stadium. 

Anthony has performed well in seven games on his rehab assignment, which has included games with both Double-A Portland and Worcester, going 7-for-23 with two home runs and two doubles while driving in seven runs. 

It hasn't been as pretty a picture for Story, though, as he's struggled at the plate, going just 5-for-32 in nine games while striking out 30 percent of the time. 

The team is expected to wait until rosters expand to 28 on Sept. 1 before activating Kiner-Falefa, allowing them to keep several key role players who have stepped up in the trio's absence on the major league roster without spending 10 days in Triple-A after being optioned. In seven games for Worcester, Kiner-Falefa has gone 4-for-22. 

The Red Sox will look to bounce back from Friday night's series-opening loss against the Yankees in Saturday's doubleheader.  Rookie left-hander Jake Bennett (8-6, 3.49 ERA) will get the start for the Red Sox in game one opposite Carlos Rodon (4-2, 3.15 ERA) for the Yankees. First pitch from Yankee Stadium is set for 1:05 p.m. ET.
