For the final time in the regular season, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will square off as the sides will meet for a crucial four-game series at Yankee Stadium with the teams separated by only two games in the Wild Card Race. 

Here’s what you need to know ahead of Friday’s series opener: 

Entering play on Friday, New York holds a two-game lead over Boston for the first wild-card spot and home-field advantage for a potential wild-card series between the two sides. While the Red Sox’ 39-29 record on the road is better than the 34-32 mark they’ve posted at home, the team has gone 17-6 at Fenway Park since turning its season around on June 25. 

The playoff-like atmosphere at Fenway throughout the summer, paired with the Yankees' 2025 Wild Card victory at Yankee Stadium, makes home-field advantage feel far more important in 2026 than in previous years.

Should the Red Sox take three of four in the Bronx, they’ll head back to Fenway for a three-game set with Seattle in a tie with the Yankees for the top wild-card spot, while a four-game sweep would have them one game up on their rivals. 

Both sides have suffered injuries to some of their most important players. Boston has been without both Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony for over three months, while New York has been without Aaron Judge since May 31 and Max Fried since mid-August.

However, both sides appear to be gearing up for a heavyweight fight this weekend, as Anthony nears a return after performing well in his rehab appearances with Triple-A Worcester. After dealing with elbow soreness in Miami, interim manager Chad Tracy chose to give All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman an extra day of rest for Wednesday’s series finale loss in hopes that he would be 100 percent for the weekend. 

While over on the Yankees side, they are expected to activate Fried off the injured list to start one of the games as part of Saturday’s doubleheader. 

With the impending activation of Fried, the Yankees have done all they can to line up their best starters to take on a Red Sox lineup that leads baseball in runs scored in the month of August. 

New York will have a decided advantage on the mound in Friday night’s game one as they send Massachusetts native and current American League Cy Young Award Favorite, Cam Schlittler to the mound opposite veteran left-hander Patrick Sandoval. 

After dominating his hometown team in each of his first three outings against them, including last year’s Wild Card series deciding game three, Boston appeared to crack the code in a June 25 victory over New York in which they tagged Schlittler for four runs, all of which were unearned, on five hits, including a three-run blast off the bat of Caleb Durbin. 

Still, though, the Red Sox offense will have its work cut out for it against a starter who has posted a 0.68 ERA across 26.2 innings against them. 

Meanwhile, the Red Sox will send their No. 5 starter, Patrick Sandoval, to the mound. While the veteran left-hander has performed well after missing over two years, his WHIP of 1.76 ranks the eighth-highest in baseball among starters with at least 30 innings of work. Though the Red Sox pitching staff is certainly catching the Yankees offense at the right time, as they’ve scored only 88 runs in August, the sixth-fewest in the sport. 

With Fried not yet officially activated off the injured list, rookie left-hander Jake Bennett is the only listed starter for either game. After one of the worst starts of his young major league career against the Pirates, Bennett bounced back nicely in Sunday’s victory over the Giants, allowing three runs on seven hits across seven innings of work. 

Saturday’s start will mark the second time the 25-year-old has faced the Yankees after allowing one earned run on three hits across 6.1 innings in the Red Sox’ 3-2 win on June 27. 

Fried has been on the injured list since Aug. 14 with a bone bruise in his left elbow. Prior to landing on the IL, the 32-year-old left-hander posted a 2.81 ERA in 86.1 innings pitched in 2026. Fried shut down the Boston lineup in his lone start against them in 2026, tossing eight scoreless innings in New York’s April 22 win. In six career starts against the Red Sox, Fried has posted a 1.88 ERA. 

As for Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy’s plans for game two? It’s likely Boston will employ a bullpen game led by Brayan Bello. In 54.2 innings of relief work, Bello has posted a 0.99 ERA, the second-lowest mark among all qualified relievers. 

Aside from a rough performance in game two of last year’s wild-card series, the 27-year-old has thrived under the bright lights of the rivalry, posting a 2.35 ERA in 11 starts against New York, including a 1.44 ERA in five starts at Yankee Stadium. 

After posting a 3.15 ERA in 17 starts prior to landing on the injured list with an adductor strain ahead of the All-Star Game, Suarez has not looked like his pre-injury self. In five starts since returning from the IL on July 27, the left-hander has posted a 4.00 ERA while lasting just over four innings per start on average. In two starts against New York in 2026, Suarez has allowed five earned runs on 11 hits across 11 innings of work, striking out 10 and walking only two. The Red Sox have lost both of Suarez’s starts against the Yankees. 

New York will counter with the 27-year-old right-hander Warren, who, in 26 appearances, has posted a 4.39 ERA. Despite the solid overall numbers, Warren has struggled over the last three months, posting a 5.60 ERA in his last 62.2 innings. He has also struggled in four career starts against the Red Sox, allowing 20 earned runs in 27 hits, including a 5.2-inning performance in which he allowed five earned runs on seven hits in his lone outing against the team in 2026. 

While the final meeting between the two rivals isn't the end-all, be-all of the regular season, the winner of the series will find themselves in the driver's seat for home-field advantage in what feels like an inevitable playoff matchup between the two sides.
