The Boston Red Sox lineup was dealt a huge blow on Tuesday afternoon when newly acquired infielder Curtis Mead was placed on the 10-day injured list with a broken left wrist. After returning to Boston to meet with a hand specialist, the 25-year-old reportedly received good news about his recovery. 

Mead made his Red Sox debut on Monday night, playing second base and batting second as the Red Sox kicked off a seven-game West Coast trip with a 4-2 win over the Athletics in West Sacramento. However, the 25-year-old’s night was cut short when he was hit in the wrist by a 94 mph fastball from A’s starter Jack Perkins. After attempting to remain in the game, Mead was removed in the bottom of the fifth inning. 

The initial prognosis was that the team may have dodged a bullet, as X-rays were negative. However, after waking up on Tuesday still in pain, Boston sent Mead for an MRI, which revealed a break, landing him on the injured list after just two plate appearances in a new uniform. Interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters on Tuesday night that the 25-year-old would return to Boston to meet with a hand specialist to determine if he would need season-ending surgery or not. 

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Mead received good news upon meeting with the specialist: he would not need surgery and was given a tentative timeline of 6-8 weeks to return to the Boston lineup. 

Should Mead remain on track throughout his recovery, he could return as early as September as the Red Sox enter the stretch run. 

The Red Sox have had their fair share of issues with injury timelines in 2026. When budding superstar Roman Anthony first suffered what was later revealed to be a torn ligament in his right ring finger, it was thought he would need only a few days off, which then turned into a minimum stay on the 10-day injured list. Now 87 days after the injury, Anthony remains in purgatory, unable to swing a bat until he is completely pain-free. 

The same happened to 2025 Cy Young runner-up Garrett Crochet, who landed on the injured list on April 29 with left shoulder inflammation, with the expectation of missing only one start. Like Anthony, Crochet remains in purgatory with no timeline on when he will begin a throwing progression, recently telling reporters that time is running out on his ability to build up enough to return to the rotation before the regular season comes to an end. 

As we’ve learned with Anthony, hand and wrist injuries can be fickle, and if Mead is still in pain at the end of the eight-week recovery timeline, the Red Sox will play it safe with their latest acquisition until he is back to 100%. 

The Red Sox did not make the move to send Mead to the injured list official on Tuesday, as his replacement, utility man Nick Sogard, was unable to make it to Sacramento in time for Tuesday’s first pitch. The move was made official ahead of Wednesday night’s game. 

Boston will look to bounce back from Tuesday night's 4-3 loss to the Athletics in game three of four from Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Patrick Sandoval (0-0, 3.21 ERA) will get the start for the Red Sox opposite Jacob Lopez (5-4, 6.12 ERA) for the A's. First pitch set for 9:40 p.m. ET.
