On April 25, just 27 games into the regular season, the Boston Red Sox sent shockwaves through the baseball world when they made sweeping changes to their major league coaching staff, firing the third-winningest manager in franchise history, Alex Cora, and six members of his major league coaching staff, including third base coach and outfield instructor, Kyle Hudson.
According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, Hudson has landed his next job as first-base coach with the Detroit Tigers.
About Hudson
A former outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles, Hudson began coaching in the Cleveland Guardians system in 2019, serving as the bench coach in Triple-A Columbus. After one season in Columbus, Hudson was quickly promoted to Cleveland’s major league staff as a staff assistant in 2020.
After three seasons in Cleveland, the Red Sox hired Hudson in January 2023 as first base coach and outfield instructor. After one season as first-base coach, Hudson moved to third-base coach when the team moved on from longtime third-base coach Carlos Febles after the 2023 season, a role he held until his firing in April.

What are the other coaches up to?
Hudson becomes the third coach of the seven who were fired to find new employment. Former assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson was named the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins on Oct. 12 after joining the organization as a roving hitting instructor over the summer. Former hitting coach Pete Fatse, who joined the Tampa Bay Rays organization as an advisor to the research and development team, was hired by the Philadelphia Phillies to be their next hitting coach.
As for Cora, he rejected an offer to join former Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski in Philadelphia as the Phillies' manager. The 51-year-old is still owed over $7 million in 2027 from his deal with the Red Sox and will reportedly take the 2027 season before deciding whether to manage again.
Meanwhile, on the Red Sox staff
After reassigning interim third-base coach Chad Epperson to manager in Triple-A Worcester and interim first-base coach Pablo Cabrera to minor-league fielding instructor, the Red Sox have two openings on their major-league staff.
Last week, Boston hired former Houston Astros major league field coordinator Jason Bell as their outfield coach. It’s unclear whether or not Bell will take over for Epperson or Cabrera as a base coach.
