The Colorado Rockies had a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the eighth before the Detroit Tigers got off the mat and scored seven runs. That proved to be the difference on Saturday.

There have been some tough losses during the 2026 MLB season for the Colorado Rockies, but Saturday's loss to the Detroit Tigers might top them all.

On a day when catcher Hunter Goodman smashed his 38th home run this season and Ezequiel Tovar mashed his 11th homer, that should have been some highlight-reel moments for Colorado.

Alas, though, they fell by the wayside when the final out was recorded.

The Rockies led 7-4 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, apparently headed to capture a rare win in recent games. Detroit, though, took advantage of some sloppy relief pitching by the Rockies. Seven runs later, the Tigers secured an 11-7 win at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Rockies' bullpen implodes

Oh boy, this defeat leaves Colorado feeling the pinch while trying to avoid 100 losses. The Rockies have 93 losses after Saturday's defeat, meaning they can only afford six more losses this season to not have 100 defeats.

Tanner Gordon got the start from Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer on Saturday, going four innings. He gave up 10 hits, four earned runs, walked one, and struck out five. Relievers Juan Mejia and Brennan Bernardino followed Gordon and held Detroit hitters in check.

The worm turned, though, when Jaden Hill could not get a single out in the Tigers' eighth inning. Hill took the loss, falling to 1-4 overall. He allowed four hits, five earned runs, and walked one. Jordan Romano followed and, well, earned his fifth blown save this season. He pitched the eighth, giving up one hit, two earned runs, and walked two.

Yeah, that's no way to secure a victory for Colorado.

Colorado mounted strong lead

The Rockies scored three runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth, two in the sixth, and one in the eighth. Detroit scored two runs in each the third and fourth innings, then was kept off the scoreboard through the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

Colorado was 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left nine total runners on base on Saturday. Detroit's numbers were much worse, going 7-for-22 with runners in scoring position and leaving 13 total runners on base.

Gleyber Torres' RBI double, Riley Greene's RBI single, Spencer Torkelson's and Ben Malgeri's bases-loaded walks, and Hao-Yu Lee's two-run triple highlighted Detroit's late rally.

Schaeffer and his players might not want to watch these highlights at all. That bullpen situation, though, will be one area that Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes need to look at closely.

Toss in the starting pitching rotation, too.

It's just a tough way to see Colorado get another loss before the final game of the 2026 MLB season arrives down the road.
