Mason Miller shut the door for the San Diego Padres, who proved too much to handle for the Colorado Rockies.
Over the first five innings, Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Gabriel Hughes did his best to keep the Rockies in their Wednesday afternoon series finale against the San Diego Padres.
Hughes gave up six hits, three earned runs, walked one, and struck out two. It would have been considered a good outing if his teammates had come through with scoring some runs. Hughes now has a 3.33 ERA this season, which is not too bad as part of the Rockies' pitching staff.
Six Padres pitchers, including relief ace Mason Miller, who picked up his 28th save on Wednesday afternoon, kept the Rockies' offense in check, Colorado batters only got six total hits against San Diego.
Rockies' offense pretty quiet
The Rockies only scored one run in the game, and that came in the top of the seventh inning. Brett Sullivan's single to right field scored Willi Castro, helping the team move a bit closer to San Diego. The Padres still led 3-1 after the Rockies' half of the seventh inning.
In the Padres' half of the fourth inning, Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado singled and Ty France was hit by a Hughes pitch. That loaded the bases up with nobody out. Jackson Merrill's RBI single got San Diego on the board at 1-0. Cronenworth scored on Merrill's hit.
Then, Luis Rengifo grounded out and Machado scored, upping the Padres' lead to 2-0. Gavin Sheets sacrifice fly brought in France, giving San Diego a 3-0 edge at that point.
The Rockies then put together that one-run rally. After that, though, the scoreboard remained silent through the last out of the game.
After the loss, Colorado falls to 42-67 this season. That's right. Twenty-five games below .500 as July is coming to an end. The Rockies are staring straight ahead at the MLB Trade Deadline, which comes up on Aug. 3.
Team is now 25 games below .500
At this point, and being 25 games under .500, it would not be surprising to see Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes turn into some big-time sellers.
Something has to change with the club right now. Hopefully, DePodesta and Byrnes don't consider catcher Hunter Goodman as trade bait. Sure, there are teams who need catching help that would love to add Goodman to their rosters.
Sullivan went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Rockies with one RBI and he struck out one, too. Padres reliever Griffin Canning got his second win this season, now standing at 2-9 overall. Hughes drops to 0-3 with his loss.
The Rockies need a whole lot of work done to the roster. Seeing the team go out and play like they did on Wednesday afternoon is something that Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer probably doesn't like to see.
And, to be honest, Colorado has to win more games than lose them moving forward this season.
On Thursday, the Rockies have a day off. On Friday, Colorado goes to Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City for a three-game weekend series against the Kansas City Royals.
