The Colorado Rockies fell behind early against the San Diego Padres, yet battled back only to suffer their eighth straight loss.
There still is some fight in the Colorado Rockies as was shown on Monday night against the San Diego Padres. But Colorado fell behind in the early innings, pushed to get back into the game, and ended up with a loss.
The Padres managed to hold off Colorado 8-7 at Coors Field, sending the Rockies to their eighth straight defeat. Padres ace closer Mason Miller came on in the ninth and, outside of giving up a Kyle Karros infield hit, had total control in picking up a save. It is Miller's 37th save in the 2026 MLB season.
San Diego jumped out to a 6-1 lead through the first three innings, but the Rockies made it 6-5 through six innings. The teams traded runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Still, Colorado just was unable to get a tying or winning run across home plate.
Sugano wasn't sharp at all
Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano was not good at all on Monday night, getting the loss and falling to 12-10 overall. In five innings of work, Sugano gave up eight hits, six earned runs, walked one, struck out two, and surrendered two home runs.
Relivers Mark Manfredi and Juan Mejia both gave up earned runs in their outings.
San Diego starter Casey Mize picked up the win for the Padres, going to 6-9 overall. In five innings, Mize allowed eight hits, two earned runs, two walks, and didn't strike out a batter. Reliever Kyle Hart worked one-third of an inning for San Diego, giving up three earned runs.
Bradgley Rodriguez followed Hart and allowed an earned run, which Adrian Morejon also did as well. Both pitchers, though, earned holds for their efforts.
Rockies had scoring opportunities
Colorado had plenty of opportunities to get runners home from being on base, but they simply did not get the job done. The Rockies were 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left 10 total runners on base. That's enough to cause Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer to lose some sleep.
Cole Carrigg hit his eighth home run, a solo shot, off Rodriguez in the seventh inning. Six Rockies had two hits apiece in the loss, including left fielder Jake McCarthy, second baseman Connor Norby, catcher Hunter Goodman, first baseman TJ Rumfield, Carrigg, and third baseman Kyle Karros.
With the defeat, the Rockies are now 55-95 this season, 40 games below .500. In their last 10 games, Colorado has gone 1-9 with that eight-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Padres have won eight straight games.
It's simple math now. The Rockies can only lose four more games down the stretch to not hit 100 losses. Time is running out, too.
