Right now, ESPN has Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman as the No. 8 trade candidate among the outlet's Top 100 trade candidates before MLB Trade Deadline.
Well, well, it appears that there's some smoke, albeit how much of it is legitimate, about Hunter Goodman getting traded before the Aug. 3 MLB Trade Deadline.
Goodman, the Colorado Rockies' catcher, recently put together a multi-home run game that might have gotten the attention of a few competing teams in the major leagues.
On Tuesday, Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN released their updated list of the Top 100 trade candidates at this point. Goodman, on that list, was No. 8.
Before sharing what the ESPN article said about Goodman, it should be noted how the outlet came up with its ranking system. "Players ranked by total trade value with rest-of-season value as tiebreaker (not odds of being dealt); 10% trade likelihood minimum," the article indicated.
Potential landing spots for Goodman
According to the ESPN article, these five MLB teams are potential places where Goodman might land if he is traded.
Ready? These teams are the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Tampa Bay Rays.
How does ESPN size up Goodman?
ESPN's data indicates that there is a 15% chance of Goodman getting traded, while his rest-of-season impact was listed as high. Incidentally, the Rockies have three more years of control over Goodman after this season ends.
And, while we are talking about timelines, it should be noted that the shadows of a potential 2027 lockout loom over MLB at this time.
What about the trade buzz around Goodman right now?
"Goodman was never even a top-10 prospect for the Rockies, lurking underneath the radar with his powerful right-handed stroke and enough chops to remain at catcher even as there were calls for him to move to first base," according to Passan and McDaniel.
"He has evolved into one of the best power hitters in baseball, following his 31-homer breakout last season with 30 pumps through the Rockies' first 101 games," the ESPN article continued.
"As much as the Rockies have waited years for another homegrown star, they are in such a dire pitching situation that Goodman at least offers them an opportunity to land high-ceiling arms," Passan and McDaniel pointed out.
"Colorado is not looking to deal him, but should the right suitor call, new president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta certainly won't hang up."
Scouting report about Goodman
When Passan and McDaniel got together to look at Goodman's scouting report, they wrote, "Goodman's scouting report that pushed him to the fourth round in the 2021 draft out of Memphis was pretty simple: big power/bat speed, iffy contact, iffy pitch selection, iffy defense behind the plate.
"That's still largely the report, though he has improved a lot behind the plate to be basically average now," according to the ESPN article. "But Goodman also has plus-plus power and gets to it in games with a modern, pull-heavy approach; he's on pace for at least 40 bombs this year."
