Can the Colorado Rockies finish this season with a victory over the Chicago White Sox?

After a long, long season, the Colorado Rockies are going to wrap things up with Game No. 162 at Rate Field on Sunday afternoon.

The American League playoff-bound Chicago White Sox will be the opponent. This game might be a case where the White Sox rest some of their regulars. Chicago will have its eyes on Target Field in Minnesota, where the Texas Rangers go up against the Minnesota Twins.

At the same time, eyes will be focused on Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, Calif., as the Houston Astros face the Athletics. Those game results determine where the White Sox travel for the American League Wild Card Series.

Rockies still have few goals

But the Rockies have some things that they want to accomplish, too. Colorado does not really want to finish up on a losing note. There have been signs of improvement this season despite yet another 100-plus-loss season.

Featured stories

Can Hunter Goodman, who now has 41 home runs this season after his two-homer night on Saturday against the White Sox, add another one? Will Cole Carrigg have one more impressive day at the plate and in the field? Also, can the Rockies get some length out of their starting pitcher?

Needless to say, the month-to-month records that Colorado has put up this season tell a story all by itself. In March/April, the Rockies were 14-18; in May, 8-20; in June, 11-15; in July, 10-14; in August, 9-19, and so far in September, 6-17.

If the Rockies had been able to pack on a few more wins in August and September, then there is an outside chance that they could have avoided 100 losses. Still, that did not happen.

What will happen in offseason?

What will Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer look to do before next season when it comes to the roster? A lot of that depends on what Colorado president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes do in the offseason.

Obviously, they will look at really reshaping the pitching staff. It's unclear if there will be any changes to Schaeffer's coaching staff. Also, decisions on players who are free agents after this season ends will be on the to-do list.

Rockies fans continued to show their support for the team at Coors Field this season. They are a long-suffering bunch, waiting for this franchise to even reach a level of its previous success.

On this final day of the 2026 MLB season for Colorado, ending with a victory can be important to the team's mindset for the future.

And, yes, the future does look bright.
