In an impressive win on Friday afternoon, the Colorado Rockies found a way to defeat the National League Central Division-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
If you are looking for a pretty big win this season for the Colorado Rockies, then take a peek at what they did against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Tomoyuki Sugano worked 5.1 innings, the Rockies' bullpen was tough, and third baseman Kyle Karros went 2-for-4 with an RBI as Colorado beat the Brewers 5-2. This was the last-place team in the National League West Division coming into American Family Field and putting an "L" on Milwaukee, the NL Central Division leaders.
Colordo scored early and often, always staying a step ahead of Milwaukee in the game. With all of that in mind, here are three takeaways from Friday afternoon's contest.
Sugano's outing pretty good
The Rockies needed a starting pitcher to go deep into a game, taking a little pressure off of the bullpen. Sugano got the assignment and did his best to do just that for Colorado. His start comes on the heels of a really bad loss on Wednesday at Coors Field.
Sugano, in his 5.1 innings of work, gave up six hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out five. But Sugano also gave up two home runs to Brewers hitters.
He now has a 4.69 ERA, but his overall record now stands at 10-4. When Sugano has taken the mound, Colorado hitters have been putting up runs to support him.
Bullpen comes through in clutch
After Sugano left, he had a 4-1 lead. Reliever Victor Vodnik worked 1.2 clean innings, followed by one inning from Antonio Senzatela. Senzatela just gave up one hit while he was on the mound.
Jordan Romano, who has pretty much locked down the closer's role for Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer, worked the ninth inning. He allowed two hits, but Romano struck out one and he picked up his eighth save.
Rockies' batters jumped on Drohan
Brewers starting pitcher Shane Drohan took the loss, falling to 5-4 this season. A former fifth-round draft pick in the 2020 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox, Drohan looked like he was ready to dominate the Rockies.
Well, that didn't happen.
Colorado took the bull by the horns, so to speak, and put some hurting on Drohan. In six innings of work, Drohan gave up six hits, five earned runs, walked two, and struck out six. He now has a 3.51 ERA on the season, too.
Speaking of batters, Jake McCarthy only went 1-for-5. But, with Colorado up 2-1 in the top of the third inning, McCarthy slashed a ball to right field. He didn't stop running around the bases, either, until he reached third base.
Just another hustle play from McCarthy, who has been mentioned in some trade chatter with the MLB Trade Deadline coming up on Aug. 3.
After the victory, Colorado is 42-63 overall. The San Francisco Giants played later on Friday night, but the Rockies are now 1.5 games behind the Giants for fourth place in the NL West. Should the Giants keep on losing and the Rockies add another win in this series, they'll be closer to fourth place.
It could be an interesting weekend in Milwaukee for the Brewers.
