Outfielder-first baseman Charlie Condon has been tearing up the Pacific Coast League this season. Will the Colorado Rockies keep him in the minors or call him up after the All-Star break?
Sometimes, allowing a player to mature in all aspects of his game in the minor leagues is a smart move. With his numbers right now, though, Charlie Condon might be in line for a call-up from the Colorado Rockies.
On Wednesday, Condon, the Rockies' No. 2 prospect and No. 71 overall by MLB Pipeline, was added to the MLB All-Star Futures Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Condon has made headlines recently, beyond the Futures Game invitation, for winning Pacific Coast League Player of the Week honors.
Condon went 10-for-28, including two triples, nine RBIs, and three home runs. Last Sunday, Condon hit two home runs in helping the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes to an 11-3 win over the Salt Lake Bees, the Los Angeles Angels' Triple-A franchise.
Condon Earns PCL Accolades
In the PCL week covered for Condon's award, he had 10 hits and 24 total bases.
He played his college baseball at the University of Georgia and was the No. 3 overall pick by the Rockies in the 2024 MLB Draft. Condon has worked his way through the Rockies' minor-league system.
Right now, Condon is hitting .293 with 20 home runs, 59 RBIs, and five stolen bases. He's played in 72 games for the Isotopes so far this season. Condon also has 15 doubles and six triples so far, too.
Oh, and his OPS? Let's talk about a 1.030 OPS number right now.
Condon has continued to improve season after season. He's getting headlines throughout the minor leagues and, well, it appears that the Rockies might want him to get more seasoning at Albuquerque.
The question, though, becomes how much more seasoning does Condon need and does it make sense to bring him up now? The Rockies are coming up to the All-Star break, where Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and manager Warren Schaeffer might compare some notes.
Realistically, the Rockies are not a winner right now. Yes, they have played better since starting out this season with a tough first month. The ballclub has shown signs of grittiness and toughness with an ability to rally late in games.
Condon Can Play Multiple Positions
To Condon's credit, he can play three different positions in right field and at first base. In the Rockies' starting lineup, there must be a spot where Condon can sub for an everyday player and let the big-league staff see what he can do on the MLB level.
Want one more final statistic about Condon right now? In his minor-league career, Condon has 36 doubles, 11 triples, and 34 career home runs with 138 career RBIs.
At every level he's competed at in his career, Condon has made incremental progress. It might be time for the Rockies to bring him up and give him a chance to show them what he can do in the MLB world.
Let's see if the Rockies' organization calls him up or lets him just stay in the minor leagues this season. They can then potentially plan to have him in their big-league roster plans for the 2027 MLB season.
Time will tell, but Condon is a future MLB star player in the making.
