With the MLB Trade Deadline just about two weeks away, Colorado Rockies center fielder Jake McCarthy still finds his name among potential trade candidates.
Jake McCarthy has been playing really good for the Colorado Rockies this season, putting in time when roaming around center field.
It's hard to think that Rockies president of baseball operations would consider trading McCarthy at the MLB Trade Deadline, which arrives on Aug. 3.
Still, McCarthy's name continues to be mentioned in numerous media outlets as a player who just might be on a new team in the next couple of weeks.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com has put out an article that features all the best MLB players at their position who could be on the move at the deadline. And yes, Feinsand spent some time talking about McCarthy.
McCarthy is playing quite well
"McCarthy is in the midst of the best season of his career, already setting a personal best with 10 home runs and equaling his previous high with his 56th RBI on Tuesday night," Feinsand wrote.
"His .864 OPS is nearly 130 points above his career average, and he’s been slightly above average defensively," Feinsand continued. "McCarthy is owed roughly $500,000 this season and is arbitration-eligible for two more years, making him a cost-controlled asset for Colorado."
In his perspective, there's a medium chance that McCarthy goes to another team and away from Colorado.
"The Rockies certainly don’t have to move McCarthy, but given their rebuilding timeline, capitalizing on his strong season could be the way to go," Feinsand wrote.
"First-year president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta will likely look at any and all options leading up to the Deadline, and with so few teams firmly in the 'sell' camp, the Rockies may be in a strong position to maximize the return for their trade chips."
McCarthy has impressive slash line
McCarthy has a slash line of .307/.351/.864 with 10 home runs and 56 RBIs. He also has 17 stolen bases, too, showing opponents that he can motor on the basepaths when necessary.
McCarthy played college baseball at the University of Virginia. He was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2018 MLB Draft's Competitive Balance-A group. McCarthy was the No. 39 overall pick in that draft as well.
He reached the major leagues in 2021 and played his first five MLB seasons with the Diamondbacks. The 2026 season is the first one that he's been with Colorado. In 2024 while he was with Arizona, McCarthy played in 142 games, hitting .285 with eight home runs and 58 RBIs.
Look, if McCarthy goes away from the Rockies, then it'll definitely become a big loss. The Rockies are in rebuild mode and, to be honest, have already won 40 games way before Colorado did in the 2025 MLB season.
DePodesta could find a fit for McCarthy for a pretty solid return. Yet, is it worth dealing McCarthy at this time? Should the first-year Rockies leader of the Rockies' front office, including Rockies general manager Josh Byrnes, decide to make a move, any inclusion of McCarthy must make some kind of sense.
Look for McCarthy to maintain a "medium" mode before the trade deadline hits.
