The Chicago White Sox rebounded from a difficult stretch by sweeping the Athletics at Rate Field, improving to 50-45 and maintaining their place atop the AL Central heading into the All-Star break.
After limping toward the All-Star break and being swept by the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago White Sox needed to get themselves off the mat in their final series of the first half.
Just as they have throughout the 2026 season, the White Sox answered the call, delivering a timely sweep of the Athletics at Rate Field this weekend.
It was a critical stretch of games that generated plenty of excitement and momentum heading into the break.
White Sox Sweep Athletics
On Friday night, Chicago unleashed a barrage of hits. Tristan Peters completed the seventh cycle in White Sox franchise history, and Sean Burke threw seven strong innings with nine strikeouts as the White Sox ran away with a 14-1 win.
Saturday afternoon's game was a lot less lively, but it was just as important. Bryan Hudson and Chris Murphy were deployed as openers before Erick Fedde gave the White Sox four shutout innings, working out of a critical jam in the sixth and turning things over to the bullpen with a lead.
An RBI double by Chase Meidroth put the White Sox on top 1-0, and that score held as Sean Newcomb and Grant Taylor slammed the door to secure the series win.
Saturday was an all around celebration for those in attendance. Prior to the game, there was a draft party at Rate Field as the White Sox selected UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky with the first overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. With their next selection, the White Sox landed Landon Thome, the son of former White Sox slugger and MLB Hall of Famer Jim Thome.
The game was also followed by an Alumni Home Run Derby that was worth the price of admission.
It would have been easy to lay an egg on the heels of such a big day, but the White Sox poured gasoline on the fire Sunday when they scored six runs in the first inning on home runs from Sam Antonacci and Braden Montgomery. Noah Schultz delivered a strong bounce back outing to regain some of his confidence, and the White Sox won 9-1.
White Sox Hold AL Central Lead At All-Star Break
Now here we are at the All-Star break, with the White Sox sitting at 50-45 and in first place in the AL Central. While the White Sox are technically tied with the 51-46 Cleveland Guardians, their 4-3 advantage in the head-to-head season series puts them atop the division as we reach the Midsummer Classic.
Who would have thought we would be here when this season first got started?
In addition to their record and current standing as the No. 2 seed in the AL playoff picture, the White Sox also have the second-best run differential (+35) of any American League team, trailing only the New York Yankees (+91). With their weekend winning streak, Chicago also created a little bit of separation between themselves and the Detroit Tigers, who are now 6.5 games out of first place.
That may not seem particularly important, and it may feel like the White Sox have bigger fish to fry, but in my estimation, it is essential for them to push as many AL Central teams as possible out of the division race before we reach the trade deadline. Thinning out the field of competition can only be a positive.
Ultimately, the White Sox have never needed a series sweep more than they did this past weekend. It truly felt like the team was running out of steam as it approached the break, and the standings were starting to get a bit crowded. Maintaining their spot atop the division should energize the roster and the fans. It should also provide the front office with plenty of motivation to make additions at the trade deadline, which is now just three weeks away.
The White Sox also improved their home record to 31-17 after sweeping the Athletics, but they're about to face yet another test on the road. When the White Sox return from the All-Star break Friday night, they will head to Toronto for a date with the Blue Jays before continuing their road trip in Texas the following week.
