The White Sox are on pace for one of the biggest year-to-year improvements in Major League Baseball history, and their recent play suggests an even higher ceiling may be within reach.
After three consecutive seasons of losing 100-plus games, the 2026 Chicago White Sox appear to be legitimate playoff contenders.
With a 38-32 record, the White Sox currently sit atop the AL Central standings. They've also been one of the best teams in baseball after a slow start to the year.
With their current winning percentage of .543, Chicago is on pace to win right around 87-88 games. That would almost certainly be good enough to clinch a postseason berth given the current outlook in the American League. But perhaps the White Sox are even better than their current record suggests.
Since April 17, the White Sox are 32-19. That's a winning percentage of .627. Should they maintain that level of play for the remaining 92 games on the schedule, you're looking at a 95-67 team that would probably win the AL Central and finish with one of the best records in the American League.
Is that realistic? I wouldn't hold my breath for that kind of season from the White Sox. But it's not completely off the table given what we've seen from Chicago recently. They've won eight consecutive home series and have taken down teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, and Chicago Cubs.
And should the White Sox happen to put together a 95-win season, it would represent the greatest one-year turnaround in Major League Baseball history.
The current record for year-to-year win improvement belongs to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who went 65-97 in their inaugural 1998 season before following it up with a 100-62 campaign in 1999. By 2001, the D-backs had won their franchise's first and only World Series title, and that 35-win improvement remains the high-water mark.
The White Sox finished 60-102 in 2025, so maintaining that .627 pace and posting a 95-win season would tie the all-time record. Even if Chicago falls a few games short of that mark, all it takes is a 52-40 finish the rest of the way to reach the 90-win threshold. That would be a 30-win improvement, something only seven teams in baseball history have accomplished.
As mentioned on the CHSN broadcast over the weekend, the White Sox are also looking to become the first team in history to lose 100+ games in back-to-back season and make the playoffs the following year. Not to mention the fact that it's been three seasons in a row of 100+ losses.
So when you watch this 2026 White Sox team take the field, know that you're not only watching the best story of the Major League Baseball season, but possibly history in the making.
