Randal Grichuk has made an immediate impact on the field for the White Sox, and his presence is already earning praise inside Chicago’s clubhouse.
With a five-game winning streak, no team in baseball is hotter than the Chicago White Sox right now.
It couldn't have come at a better time for the South Siders. A sweep of the Kansas City Royals this week now puts the White Sox over .500 with a 22-21 record and all kinds of anticipation for a weekend series with the crosstown rival Chicago Cubs.
What's even more encouraging is how the White Sox got here. The trio of Munetaka Murakami, Colson Montgomery, and Miguel Vargas has powered Chicago's offense for most of the 2026 season up to this point. But the White Sox are also beginning to embrace the "next-man-up" mindset that is required of any contending team.
Each night, it feels like there is a new player delivering in a big moment and helping the White Sox win.
We've seen clutch home runs from Derek Hill and well-timed extra-base hits off the bat of Jarred Kelenic. 24-year-old catcher Drew Romo has four home runs in his first 11 games in a White Sox uniform. But you can't mention unlikely heroes without acknowledging what veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk has done since joining this team.
His performance on the field has helped spark this White Sox win streak, and he's already become a popular guy in the White Sox clubhouse.
Grichuk signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees back in February and accepted an invite to MLB spring training. He made New York's Opening Day roster but got off to a slow start at the plate and was 0-for-13 through his first nine games.
Despite heating up and batting .333 over his next seven contests with the Yankees, they decided to designate Grichuk for assignment on April 29.
On May 1, he elected free agency, and on May 4, the White Sox signed Grichuk to an MLB deal.
Grichuk was brought in for his veteran leadership and for his ability to hit left-handed pitching, something the White Sox desperately needed with both Austin Hays and Everson Pereira on the injured list. In his first eight games since joining the White Sox, Grichuk is 5-for-16 with three home runs and seven RBIs. That's a .313 batting average and a 1.228 OPS.
On Sunday afternoon, Grichuk helped the White Sox steal a weekend series from the Seattle Mariners with a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.
On Thursday, he helped the White Sox complete the sweep over the Royals with a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and a two-run single later on, finishing the day with four RBIs.
And that's just what he's doing on the field. We've talked so much about the fun this team is having and the clubhouse chemistry the White Sox have right now. And it's becoming pretty clear that Grichuk is positively contributing to the culture on the South Side.
In a postgame interview with Brooke Fletcher on Thursday night, Chase Meidroth’s face lit up when he was asked about Grichuk's big performance offensively.
“I love that guy. He’s awesome,” said Meidroth. “He’s great in the clubhouse. He fits right in here. I can't say enough about him as a professional. He's unbelievable. He spreads a lot of knowledge to the young guys in here, and it's good learning from him.”
Once Hays and Pereira eventually return from the IL, the White Sox will have a difficult decision to make with their outfielders. But at this point, it's essential that Chicago keeps Grichuk in the fold.
It was just two years ago, in 2024, that Grichuk had a .875 OPS and 12 home runs in 106 games played for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has proven to still have value as a veteran bat that can be deployed against left-handed pitching. He's earned his place on this White Sox team, and the fact that the young guys are rallying around him tells us all we need to know.
Chris Getz and the White Sox front office deserve a ton of credit here. They got aggressive to acquire a veteran player they felt could help the team. And the 2026 White Sox are much better off for it. These are the kinds of moves and stories that are necessary if you're going to sustain this magical run deep into the 2026 season.
