INDIANAPOLIS -- Katherine Legge's attempt at The Double will head to Charlotte Motor Speedway sooner than expected after a crash in the Indianapolis 500.
On lap 18, which ran silent in honor of two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, Ryan Hunter-Reay snapped loose off of turn two. Hunter-Reay spun right in front of Legge, leaving her with a decision to go high or low.
As Legge went low, her car snapped sideways and crashed into the inside wall, ending her Indy 500 just 42.5 miles into the first part of The Double.
"Ryan spun in front of me, I think he was battling the car for a minute and I was chilling, saving fuel. He went down the track and then started coming back up the track, so I had to pull a mission and try and go low and I just didn't make it basically," Legge said.
Legge can now only complete as many as 642.5 miles of the 1,100 miles, with the 600-mile race at Charlotte Motor Speedway coming up for her.
She will start 37th in BJ McLeod's No. 78 e.l.f. cosmetics Chevrolet after running 38th-fastest in practice.
Legge will become the sixth driver in history to do the Memorial Day Weekend Double of running the Indianapolis 500 and then flying to Charlotte to run the Coca-Cola 600. She is also the first woman to do The Double.
Kyle Larson attempted it the last two years. In 2024, he completed the Indy 500 but rain kept him out of the Coca-Cola 600. In 2025, he crashed out of both races.
The most miles Larson ever competed was 595 in 2025. Legge can surpass that by completing at least 364 of the 400 laps in the Coca-Cola 600.
