SONOMA, Cali. -- Shane van Gisbergen held off a hard-charging Chase Briscoe in Sunday's race at Sonoma Raceway to get yet another NASCAR Cup Series road course win.

SVG led 74 of 110 laps and claimed his eighth career Cup Series win, all on road courses. However, he had to worry about Briscoe, who finished just 0.357 seconds behind SVG at the checkered flag.

SVG struggled with the car in practice and didn't clearly have the best car until the second stage. Once he was out in front, he used his usual tricks: Keep the field close to start the run and then pull away as the tires worse out.

With an 11-second lead, SVG pitted in the second stage and exited seventh in the stage for the second stage in a row.

SVG ran it back in the final stage, staying steadier and far enough ahead to win. 

"Yeah, what a day. We were really bad yesterday, and these guys did an amazing job turning this car into a winner. The 19 was coming. He was really, really good, and I ran out at the end," he said.

Briscoe kept SVG to around two to three seconds in the final run. Crew chief James Small coached him under caution on what he needed, allowing him to close in lap traffic and nearly win, if a mistake in turn one with four laps to go and a final-lap challenge in turn 11 had gone better.

"Just frustrated with myself. I felt like I definitely had the better car. I didn't do as good of a job as he did driving," Briscoe said. "I was having to push so hard, and that was where I would make up my ground. It was just such a razor's edge and I about crashed. Gave up a call to second and then I was able to obviously run him back down at the end. If I don't make that mistake, I'm probably ahead of him I feel like at the end."

In third, Ty Gibbs won the pole and led the first 27 laps, claiming the first stage and 10 bonus points on lap 25. Then, after carving through the field in the second stage, he stayed out to lead four more laps, earning another stage win and 10 bonus points on lap 55.

STAGE TWO TOP-10 (LAP 55): Ty Gibbs, Christopher Bell, AJ Allmendinger, Austin Cindric, Ross Chastain, Zane Smith, Shane van Gisbergen, Connor Zilisch, Chase Briscoe, Ryan Blaney.

Gibbs was one of six drivers to stay out for stage points but that didn't stop him in the final stage. He jumped from 21st to ninth in just 12 laps. Another six laps saw him get to seventh before finishing third.

Gibbs earned the second-most points of the day but ultimately wanted to win.

“It was a great run for our SAIA Toyota team. Just got to keep working hard and keep getting better. I felt like we had the speed today. We just had a different strategy. It was a fun day. Just will keep working hard and staying after it," Gibbs said diplomatically.

In fifth, teammate Christopher Bell also raked in the stage points (18) and had a great finish with a fractured left wrist that isn't completely healed.

Connor Zilisch finished seventh for his best career Cup Series finish. This came after four finishes of 37th or worse, including at Naval Base Coronado where he led laps before a crash.

Michael McDowell finished ninth. He is the only driver to earn a top-10 finish on every street/road course race this season in the Cup Series.

Alex Bowman rounded out the top-10, earning his first finish better than 17th since finishing third at Texas Motor Speedway in May.

While it wasn't a surprise to see SVG take the lead Sunday, it came after some surprises during the weekend.

SVG was fifth-fastest in practice, didn't run 10 consecutive laps in practice and qualified sixth. Then, early on in the race, he complained about his car not running well.

"Man, we are not good," SVG said over the radio in the opening laps.

Yet, SVG was able to run a close second to Gibbs in the first stage. Then, when he had control of the race in the second stage, he built up an 11-second lead over everyone.

Despite not going for bonus points in either stage, SVG still earned eight points for finishing seventh in each stage. The Kiwi needed that, entering the race five points below the Chase cutline after crashing at Naval Base Coronado near San Diego.

Meanwhile, at the top of the points standings, both Tyler Reddick (+8 entering Sonoma) and Denny Hamlin (-8) had issues at Sonoma. 

Reddick had power steering issues after pitting during the first stage. He went six laps down due to repairs but kept going to not lose time from spending time in the garage. He picked up two free passes due to a caution for the second stage break and a caution for a crash in the final stage but was still four laps down in 36th.

Hamlin was in a good position running inside the top-10 and seeing Reddick being unable to gain any points. However, in the final stage, Hamlin spun and dropped to 34th with damage from the incident.
