The Philadelphia 76ers could pursue a waived All-Star forward in free agency.
The Philadelphia 76ers already have a ton of star power.
Between Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid, the talent level on the Sixers' roster is impressive to say the least. But is it possible one more star (besides LeBron James) is added to the mix before the start of next season?
FanSided believes so, linking the 76ers to a potential signing of aging mid-range specialist and six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan.
ESPN's Shams Charania announced Monday, "Just in: The Sacramento Kings are waiving DeMar DeRozan, making the six-time All-Star one of the top free agents, sources tell ESPN. The sides worked collaboratively on this resolution after exploring trade routes."
This decision by Sacramento's front office leaves DeRozan free to sign with any organization, likely for a veteran's minimum contract, which is all Philadelphia can offer him. It's worth noting the 76ers only have one open roster as it stands.
So, should the Sixers use their final slot on DeRozan?
What the 36-year-old does best is put the ball in the basket, and the 76ers' second unit is in need of more volume scoring. The three-time All-NBA wing averaged 18.4 points on 49.7% shooting in 77 games for the Kings last season.
Outside of scoring, there is not much DeRozan does at a high level. He's not a strong playmaker or rebounder, isn't a great defender, nor does he knock down shots from the outside at a high level. However, he does bring a veteran presence and a solid amount of postseason experience.
To answer the question, if the 76ers miss out on James and desire more scoring off the bench, then DeRozan is an intriguing option for the front office to pursue.
