The Philadelphia 76ers are predicted to regress despite their slew of offseason moves.
The acquisitions of Jaylen Brown, Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, and others should undoubtedly help the Philadelphia 76ers next season.
It's nearly consensus these additions outweigh the losses of Paul George, Kelly Oubre Jr., Quentin Grimes, and more, but one NBA analyst disagrees. The Sporting News' Stephen Noh believes the Sixers will regress in the 2026-2027 campaign, predicting the team to finish with a record of 42-40 and a power ranking of No. 13. Philadelphia had a record of 45-37 last season, so it's quite disrespectful to expect a step in the wrong direction.
Let's first analyze why Noh could believe this to be true.
The new-look core of Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Brown, and Joel Embiid could struggle to mesh, at least at first. There are a lot of mouths to feed on this roster, so if Nick Nurse fails to utilize each star properly, one or multiple key contributors could become disgruntled.
There were rumors Brown was unhappy on the Boston Celtics, so similar problems could arise in Philadelphia.
The depth of the lineup is also not the most ideal. As it stands, Philadelphia's second unit is highlighted by Simons, rookie Labaron Philon Jr., Dominick Barlow, Justin Edwards, Adem Bona, and Ariel Hukporti. The backup centers are particularly concerning, especially when considering how many games Embiid tends to miss in the regular season.
However, the talent is there for the 76ers to comfortably finish as a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference.
Maxey and Brown are All-NBA players, Edgecombe appears destined for a breakout sophomore season, and Embiid is arguably the NBA's most talented big man when at full strength. Having four players capable of averaging 20 or more points and contributing on the defensive end is a recipe for success.
The worries about chemistry and depth are valid, but to claim the 76ers will fail to crack 45 wins with such a star-studded group is a bit outrageous.
