The Philadelphia 76ers appear to seriously be in the running to sign LeBron James after trading for Jaylen Brown.
Every update on the LeBron James free agency sweepstakes seems to contradict another.
Multiple insiders are suggesting the Cleveland Cavaliers are frontrunners, but a new report from ESPN’s Shams Charania is giving the Philadelphia 76ers a sense of optimism.
Charania shared that the 22-time All-Star is taking the 76ers’ pitch “really seriously” after the organization traded for ex-Boston Celtics superstar Jaylen Brown.
"The teams that continue to come up are Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia," Charania said. "...When the Sixers got Jaylen Brown, I did some research, and I found out within 24 hours, like, he's [James] taking their pitch really seriously. When I talk to teams now, I have a hierarchy of Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia."
From a basketball perspective, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.
James would fit perfectly into Philadelphia’s starting lineup alongside Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Brown, and Joel Embiid. The 76ers are in desperate need of a player with elite playmaking chops, and the four-time NBA champion could provide just that and more. With the Los Angeles Lakers last season, James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds on 51.5% shooting in 60 games.
Unfortunately for the Sixers, there is likely more than just the on-court fit going into this decision. His ties to the Cavaliers and Heat could factor in, the city he's in may matter, and even the cold Philadelphia winter could hurt the 76ers' chances.
If James is solely focused on hoisting the Larry O'Brien Trophy a final time before calling it a career, Philadelphia has as good a chance as anyone to land the 41-year-old free agent.
It's clear the 76ers still have a real shot at landing 'King James' despite numerous figures around the NBA suggesting the Cavaliers are the clear favorite.
