The Bucks could be the team to get Peyton Watson out of Denver.

The Milwaukee Bucks are currently in the early stages of their rebuilding process, but they could be aggressive and acquire a young player who is coming off a breakout season. Denver Nuggets guard Peyton Watson has been in negotiations with the franchise for a long-term extension this summer, but nothing has come about.

Because Watson is a restricted free agent, the only way he could be on another team next summer is via a sign-and-trade. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Bucks are the team that would most likely complete the move for the young guard.

"One source briefed on Watson's situation said Monday that they see the Bucks as the most likely external suitor to swipe Watson away from Denver," Stein reported.

"The Nuggets' overall financial outlook certainly became a bit more complicated after their decision Sunday night to match Oklahoma City's two-year, $12 million offer sheet to restricted free agent Spencer Jones, which hauled Denver into the second apron."

How Likely is a Watson-Bucks Deal?

One thing to point out about Peyton Watson's chances of getting moved to Milwaukee is the Nuggets' high asking price for a potential deal. ESPN's Shams Charania reports that Denver is looking for a "high-level player" and a first-round pick to trade away Watson.

The Bucks are a team that is currently loaded with assets. In 2030, they will have a first-round pick swap with the Miami Heat thanks to the Giannis Antetokounmpo deal earlier this offseason, and they will also get their unprotected 2031 and 2033 first-round picks.

Milwaukee also drafted two players in the NBA Draft lottery: Brayden Burries and Nate Ament. It was the franchise's first time picking in the lottery since 2016, and if both of them pan out to be star players, they could afford to trade away a big part of their future for Watson.

A move like this makes it a big gamble for the Bucks. While their roster on paper looks like it could hold its own next season, there is not one player you could pinpoint and say is a "high-level player."

Tyler Herro is the most successful player on the Bucks' projected starting lineup, but he has only one career All-Star selection, which came in 2024-2025. He has the highest upside to become an immediate contributor next season, but his injury history could make the Nuggets hesitant to make a move.

This potential deal is also a big gamble because of how unproven this Bucks roster is. There is no guarantee the Heat newcomers will mesh well with the rest of Milwaukee's returning pieces. The Bucks' rookies are also going to be a big factor in the team's success, as well as influencing the outlook of the rebuilding process moving forward.

The timing of this situation puts the Bucks in an interesting spot to pursue a player like Watson, but a deal is not impossible to complete. It will all depend on how much the Denver Nuggets truly value Watson and want to keep him around next season.
