Taylor Jenkins knows what the Bucks need to work on.

The Milwaukee Bucks have fallen to 1-2 in preseason play after losing 105-90 to the Charlotte Hornets and after the game head coach Taylor Jenkins was able to pinpoint a handful of holes in the Bucks' game that he needs the team to address moving forward.

The biggest issue that Jenkins saw with that the Bucks were doing, or rather what they weren't doing, boiled down to failing to execute the little things and losing sight of the game plan.

Jenkins himself admitted his failures in scouting the Hornets' preseason squad, so on both sides of execution the Bucks went into the game without a clear vision of what they needed to do.

Lacking Execution

"I don't think we executed our game plan. First time scouting a team, trying to apply that," Jenkins said (via Cameron Ezeir).

Within that game plan, the biggest area that Jenkins wanted the Bucks to target was both containing the rebounding on Charlotte's side and excel rebounding on their own side. Jenkins knew coming into the game that the Hornets excelled at offensive rebounding and thus tasked the Bucks with containing offensive boards.

Yet, the Hornets came away with 18 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the Bucks 54-48 in total.

In the grand scheme of things, the Bucks didn't do too bad on their own rebounding side with 15 offensive boards and 33 defensive boards, but their own effort paled in comparison to what the Hornets were able to accomplish.

Committing to Fundamentals

With the Bucks being so radically reshaped in terms of personnel, focusing on fundamentals and execution are the best ways for them to be actually get ahead in games and the fact that they faltered so severely in their game plan against the Hornets is the exact kind of thing that the Bucks need to clean up before the season begins.

The Bucks may have the talent to rise above their expectations this season, but they don't have enough raw talent to overcome any obstacles they put in their own path by faltering in their execution.

Jenkins' awareness of the Bucks' issues is the first step to mending them, but it still falls to the players themselves to actually do something about their lack of execution, lest the issues that are already popping up in preseason only get worse once the regular season kicks off.

The preseason is ultimately about sanding a team's rough edges and finding out what does and doesn't work on a roster and for the Bucks, there is still a lot to figure out.

Moving forward, their goal will be to avoid repeating the mistakes that cost them the game against the Hornets, and focusing on the game plans that Jenkins lays out for them will be the first step.
