Herro scored 23 points in a 32-point loss to Houston and then had a pointed message for the rest of the locker room.
Guard Tyler Herro keeps doing his part for the Milwaukee Bucks, but he could not carry the team by himself on Wednesday night as the undefeated Houston Rockets came into Fiserv Forum and left with a 132-100 win.
A Rough Night at Fiserv Forum
Herro finished with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, and went 4-of-6 from three in 27 minutes, while the rest of the group had a hard time finding the basket as the Bucks shot 37-of-93 from the field and 12-of-41 from three.
Houston outscored Milwaukee 34-14 in the second quarter to take a 57-35 lead into halftime, and the Bucks never got back into it, even with rookie guard Brayden Burries putting up 10 points off the bench.
Guard Fred VanVleet led six Houston players in double figures with 24 points and guard Amen Thompson added 23, which is a lot of scoring from a team playing without center Alperen Sengun and guard Marcus Smart.
Milwaukee is now 1-4, and the only win came 110-102 against Indiana earlier this week.
Herro Wants Everyone Ready to Play
In his postgame media session, Herro said this young team is still going through a learning experience, but he went right back to the point he started with, as transcribed by Wisconsin Sports Heroics.
"But like I said, we're all pros, and I feel like as players we should be able to come in with the right mindset, the right approach to every game. That's what we get paid to do," Herro said.
Herro has earned the right to say it, since he has scored 117 points through five games for 23.4 per game and topped 20 points in four of them, with 34 coming in the loss to Chicago.
After that game he put the loss down to a young group still learning, and after beating Indiana he wanted the team to keep stacking days instead of taking a step back.
Wednesday was that step back, and I think Herro was right to call it out because nobody on this roster has more reason to care about this season than a Milwaukee-area native and 2025 All-Star who came home in the trade that sent forward Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat, and he is the voice this locker room needs under new head coach Taylor Jenkins.
What Comes Next for Milwaukee
Burries went No. 10 in this summer's draft and forward Nate Ament went No. 13, and the two rookies have already caught the eye of their coach, but a 32-point loss at home is not a night where good minutes from the bench are enough, because the starters have to set the tone.
Milwaukee gets a chance to answer right away when the Cleveland Cavaliers come to Fiserv Forum on Saturday, and then the Bucks head to Minnesota on Monday.
Herro picked the right night to push his teammates, since Houston has more talent right now but Milwaukee did not have to lose the effort battle too, and I want to see the starters answer him with a much better effort against Cleveland than the one they gave in that second quarter on Wednesday.
