The Boston Celtics moved to 5-1 on the young season with a 108-97 win over the Orlando Magic in Orlando on Sunday afternoon.
As has been customary in the team's hot start, Jayson Tatum carried the load. He scored 32 points on 8-of-19 shooting. He was a whopping 15-of-17 at the foul line in the win, and he also registered four rebounds, seven assists and two blocks.
We told you after Friday's win against the Chicago Bulls that Tatum had joined some exclusive history through the first five games of the season, and that remained the case after the sixth game.
As noted by the NBA, Tatum is the third player in franchise history to average at least 28 points and seven assists through the first six games of a season. Only Larry Bird and John Havlicek previously accomplished that. Considering both of those players are in the Hall of Fame, that's elite company to be in.
Tatum is averaging 28.3 ppg and 7.7 assists so far for the Celtics. And whether or not its fair, he's also getting dangerously close to matching the 28.7 ppg that Jaylen Brown averaged a season ago. Again, Tatum has many more games to go to match Brown, but there are absolutely fans and pundits out there who are measuring his season this year against Brown's last year to see if the team made the right decision building around Tatum and not Brown.

Mike Watters-Imagn ImagesA St. Louis native, Tatum is now in his 10th NBA season out of Duke. Drafted No. 3 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, he is a six-time All-Star and a five-time All-NBA selection. He helped the Celtics get to the NBA Finals in 2021-22 and he helped them win it in 2023-24, alongside Brown.
Up next for the Celtics
The Celtics will be back in action on Monday night (8:30 p.m. ET) against the Houston Rockets, who are also one of the best teams in the league so far. The Rockets, coached by Ime Udoka, are out to a 6-1 start through seven games.
Udoka coached the Celtics for one season (2021-22), taking Boston to the NBA Finals, where they lost against the Golden State Warriors. He was let go after the season for non-basketball reasons, which opened the door for Joe Mazzulla to get the Celtics job.
Mazzulla is now in his fifth season at the helm.
