When it comes to the Boston Celtics and the trade market this summer, only one thing is clear: Nobody knows a thing.
When it comes to the Boston Celtics and the offseason trade market, only one thing is clear: Nobody knows a damn thing.
Sure, people can speculate and people can give opinions, but only the people inside Celtics headquarters knows what's real and what isn't.
Take Bill Simmons of The Ringer for example. Last week, he didn't think the Celtics were in on Giannis Antetokounmpo, and now he does. He said on Wednesday that he thinks the Celtics have been playing a game of "possum" and they are actually involved in the trade talks surrounding the former MVP from the Milwaukee Bucks. Not only that, he thinks that Antetokounmpo is interested in going to Boston as well.
That's quite the 180.
The bottom line is this: There are plenty of reasons for the Celtics to be interested in acquiring Antetokounmpo, from his resume to his interior play to his defense to his ability to balance the offense. There are also plenty of reasons for the Celtics to stick with their current group, including financial reasons, Antetokounmpo's injury history and age. But only Brad Stevens and Joe Mazzulla know what's going to happen.
Stevens has always worked in the shadows to get big deals done: For instance, C's fans had no idea that the team was going to acquire Derrick White in 2021-22, or that they were going to bring in Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday before the 2023-24 season. They had no idea that Boston was going to send out Marcus Smart that offseason as well.
Also in the news for the Celtics
--Nikola Vucevic's stay in Boston is expected to be short, as Marc Stein reports that the talented big man is expected to leave the Celtics in free agency this summer.
The Celtics had acquired him at the trade deadline from the Chicago Bulls, sending out Anfernee Simons with some second round draft picks also changing hands. The deal didn't really work out for either side on the court, as Vucevic missed substantial time with a broken finger. He played in just 16 regular season games, averaging 21 minutes per night and scoring just 9.7 ppg. He averaged 6.2 ppg in the playoffs as the Celtics were eliminated by the Philadelphia 76ers in seven games in the first round.
--After seeing how the San Antonio Spurs lost to the New York Knicks on Wednesday night in the NBA Finals, is it time for the Celtics to change their style of play as an organization?
