The mock drafts are flying fast and furious, but will the Celtics even make a selection at No. 27?
The Boston Celtics currently hold the No. 27 pick in June's NBA Draft and the mock drafts are coming fast and furious.
The question is, will the C's even make a selection? That is still very much up in the air.
Let's dive in a little deeper.
Recent history
The Celtics have made first-round selections in each of the last two years, selecting Hugo Gonzalez (2025) and Baylor Scheireman (2024). Given that they entered each of the last two seasons with NBA championship aspirations, it's noteworthy that Brad Stevens held onto his picks in each of those years, making it possible that he does the same this year. For what it's worth, Gonzalez and Scheireman became valuable contributors this season, especially as Jayson Tatum was out much of the year while recovering from his Achilles injury.
On the other side
The Celtics are reportedly one of the suitors in a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason, and if they are serious about trying to get that trade made, it's quite possible they move on from the No. 27 pick.
Of course, the C's could trade Jaylen Brown for Antetokounmpo straight up, but it's unclear if that would appeal to Milwaukee, or if they'd also like some draft capital to help their rebuild.
Jayson Tatum (Duke) is introduced by NBA commissioner Adam Silver as the number three overall pick to the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft at Barclays Center. Brad Penner-Imagn ImagesCould the Celtics make a trade without trading the pick?
Sure, it's whatever the other team wants and values. Maybe the Bucks would trade Antetokounmpo for Brown straight up after all.
Maybe there's another deal to be made with another team that involves the C's getting to keep their pick.
It all remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: There is no certainly about what Stevens is going to do at this time.
Elsewhere in Celtics news
--Speaking on Tuesday's edition of 'The Herd,' Colin Cowherd and former NBA star Chandler Parsons both said they'd be OK with trading Brown in a deal for Antetokounmpo, from both perspectives. We covered the situation further in a story right here.
--Former Celtics majority owner Wyc Grousbeck is reportedly interested in buying the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL, who are up for sale. The defending Super Bowl champions have a value of nearly $7 billion and Grousbeck would spend part of the year in Seattle if a sale were ultimately to be approved.
He is still involved in Celtics leadership, but he no longer has a controlling interest.
