Kobe Sanders has stepped up to guide his teammates.
NBA Summer League is the proving ground for countless young players, both those recently drafted and those with experience either in the G League or with brief stints at the highest level.
But while Summer League is an exciting opportunity for young players to showcase their skills, it’s also a chance for more experienced players who themselves may still be on the fringe of a roster spot to embrace a new role, which is exactly the situation that Kobe Saunders has found himself in for the Los Angeles Clippers.
With the amount of moves that the Clippers have made going back to last season‘s trade deadline, they’ve infused their roster with new talent.
Sanders' New Role
For someone like Sanders, who himself was a G League player last season before landing a roster spot and has since earned a new contract, Summer League is an opportunity for him to not only continue honing his own skills, but to act as a mentor for the young players who are in the same position he was in just a year ago.
Whether it’s someone like Baba Miller or Keaton Wagler, Sanders has a lot of insight to give to his new teammates to help guide them through what is so far been the biggest transition of their careers.
“I think anybody can be a leader, from the youngest guy to the oldest guy,“ Sanders said (via The Sporting Tribune). "Just being a guy who knows what the coaches want, that's all it takes. Stepping up in my role and leading the young guys and as a young guy, I can teach them a little something on how I played last year."
How Things Could Change During Regular Season
Of course this leadership dynamic is unique to Summer League for Sanders as when it comes to the regular season, he’ll be back to being one of those young players on the floor and back to learning alongside his new teammates.
But the time he's spent now in Summer League, not only ingratiates himself with his young teammates, but it also gives him a taste of what it’s like to assume more responsibility on the floor and in the locker room.
For a team as young as transformed as the Clippers are, having a multiple leaders on the roster isn't. abad thing. Even though Sanders will be back to looking up to the players around him when the regular season roles around, the relationships and the trust he's developed leading the Summer league squad will go a long way.
It's also a great way for him personally to develop confidence and find more of his voice on the court, which can translate into chemistry, cohesion and ideally, success on the court when the tome comes.
