Recalling the incident when Jimmy Butler, Erik Spoelstra and Udonis Haslem almost got into a fight on the Miami Heat bench
NBA veteran Markieff Morris had a brief stint with the Miami Heat in 2021-22.
He only played 17 games because his season was cut short after he sustained an injury following an incident with Nikola Jokic. But Morris was around for the infamous incident between coach Erik Spoelstra, Jimmy Butler and Udonis Haslem.
Teammates had to restrain Butler and Haslem after being involved in a dust-up on the team bench that was caught by cameras. Morris detailed it on the Morris Code podcast featuring his twin brother, Marcus.
"They started going at it but he said something to UD," Morris said on the podcast. "Jimmy said something to UD and I just don't think he meant to say it. I just think it just happened and OG went there with him."
Morris further details the incident with a few expletives that can be seen in the podcast interview. We won't print it but Morris explains it in more detail. It was one of the ugliest moments in Heat history because it showed just how frustrating things had gotten within the organization. at the time
Through it all, the Heat still kept the ship afloat. They won 53 games, which was good enough for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. It was proof that Spoelstra remained in control despite the inner turmoil. Haslem, who at the time was reduced to nothing more than a player/coach, managed to keep a solid relationship with Butler.
The Heat eventually lost to the Boston Celtics in seven games in the Eastern Conference finals. They were a Butler 3-pointer away from reaching the NBA Finals to face the Golden State Warriors.
Despite the ugly moment, the Heat regrouped the following season. Even though they were the No. 8 seed, they reached the Finals. The historic run (they joined the 1999 New York Knicks as the only No. 8 seed to make the Finals) with a loss to Jokic and the Denver Nuggets in five games.
