Miami Heat forward Nikola Jovic will play for the Serbian National Team in the summer. Jovic is entering his fifth season with the Heat
Miami Heat forward Nikola Jovic admitted he was frustrated how this season played out from a personal standpoint.
He plans on doing everything possible to avoid a repeat. It starts with him making the decision to play for the Serbian National Team this summer. The news was first reported by Meridian Sports.
This is the perfect opportunity for Jovic to begin his recovery after a disappointing fourth season in the NBA. It should give him a chance to play against some top-notch competition.
"It was not easy especially with the injuries," Jovic said during exit interviews. "I feel like that was a big part of the year where I was not on the court this year. You just don't like it."
Jovic missed 35 games because of injuries. Even when he was healthy, he was often an afterthought in the rotation. After averaging double-figures for the first time in his career during the 2024-25 season, Jovic's numbers dropped across the board. He averaged just 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists. His scoring was the lowest since his rookie year.
"The other part, with my playing time," Jovic said. "It was a lot of ups and downs this year. I really thought it was going to be different with how things started. Things happen and I just got to be better."
The positive is the Heat are still confident in Jovic. If he avoid the trade package for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, he is expected to be part of the rebuilding plan.
During his post-season media session, Heat team president Pat Riley recently shared a conversation he had with Jovic after the season. It basically confirmed the Heat are looking forward to monitoring his growth.
Riley said he told him, "You were projected to be a starter for us; that’s the opportunity that you had at the beginning. We still look at Nik as one of our young building guys.”
