Jalen Brunson isn't letting a championship change his mentality, insisting the Knicks must earn everything again next season.
Winning an NBA championship can change expectations, but New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson isn't allowing it to change his mindset.
Fresh off leading the Knicks to their first NBA title in more than five decades, Brunson made it clear that last season's accomplishments won't guarantee anything moving forward.
During an appearance with Variety Sports & Entertainment Studio, the NBA Finals MVP emphasized that his confidence comes from preparation and work ethic—not from the championship trophy.
"Oh, I still have confidence. I will always have confidence in myself and my team," Brunson said. "Not because we won, because I know the type of work that we put in."
The comments reflect the mentality that helped New York climb to the top of the NBA after years of falling short in the postseason. Rather than celebrating the past, Brunson is already focused on the challenge of defending a title.
Championship Doesn't Guarantee Future Success
Brunson acknowledged that winning the championship was a special accomplishment, but he believes every season begins with a clean slate.
"Even though, yes, we did win this past year, going forward, that literally means nothing," Brunson said. "You have to prove yourself every single day."
That mindset has become a defining characteristic of Brunson throughout his career. Whether it was helping lead Villanova to NCAA championships or transforming the Knicks into title contenders, the All-Star guard has consistently relied on preparation, leadership and accountability rather than outside expectations.
The 2026 championship run only reinforced that approach. Brunson delivered one of the best postseason performances in franchise history, leading New York to its first NBA championship since 1973 while earning Finals MVP honors.
He was also recognized at the ESPYS with awards for Best Championship Performance and Best Men's Athlete following his remarkable season.

Brunson understands the biggest challenge now may not be winning a championship—it will be maintaining the hunger that got the Knicks there in the first place.
As defending champions, New York will enter every game with a target on its back. Opponents will treat matchups against the Knicks as measuring-stick games, making complacency one of the team's biggest obstacles.
Brunson believes the answer is simple: continue working the same way that produced a championship. That means focusing on daily improvement instead of relying on past accomplishments or outside praise.
