Walker Kessler will have a big role this season.

Walker Kessler may be the most important addition to the Los Angeles Lakers' roster after a busy offseason and if Kessler is able to reach the full extent of his potential while wearing the Purple and Gold, the Lakers may have just plugged the biggest hole in their entire roster, a hole that's plagued the team for years.

The Lakers have been looking far and wide for a true center to anchor their back court for years. They often tried to force Anthony Davis into playing that role when he was with the team, though not to much success, and those efforts were a large part of what drove Davis' discontentment with the team near the end of his time there.

Deandre Ayton was the Lakers' next attempt at finding a franchise center, but he consistently underperformed during his time in Los Angeles and often didn't fill the kind of responsibilities that the Lakers needed out of a true five. Now, those years of failed pursuits have lead them to Kessler.

Comeback Kessler

Kessler may have played just five games last season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum, but based on his track record before his season-ending injury, a healthy Kessler provides a defensive edge and diverse scoring options both in the paint and around the perimeter, which can in turn transform the entire roster around him.

Of course, this upcoming season will be a big "prove it" year for Kessler as he looks to get back on track after his injury, but he's apparently already made a big impression on his teammates and Collin Sexton revealed his expectations for Kessler this season in a recent interview.

“He’s gonna have a huge impact, especially on the defensive end, his presence, his rim protection, and even just his offensive ability that he’s been working on this summer," Sexton said. "I’m super excited for him and the opportunity, and also just, he’s one of my guys. He’s from Atlanta."

Offseason Work

Sexton went on to explain his Atlanta connection with Kessler even more, saying that even when they were opponents, he would tell him he was on his side outside of the game and the fact that they're teammates now is nothing short of serendipitous.

When it comes to how Kessler can be a real offensive weapon, Sexton pointed toward Kessler's three point shooting ability and his ability to finish around the rim, the latter being a crucial skill for a NBA big man.

Kessler's finishing is apparently a new development and Sexton even went on to praise the fact that Kessler took advantage of the time he was forced to be away from any games, something that would be devastating for any player to endure, and used that time to rally hone in on his flaws and focus on the ways that he can improve.

How effective Kessler can be will likely play a large part in dictating how the Lakers' season goes as a whole and based on Sexton's impressions, there should be a lot to like in Kessler's game next season.
