Jalen Suggs reveals how a lifelong bond with new head coach Sean Sweeney is fueling a systemic shift in Orlando, prioritizing disciplined efficiency over past habits.
The Orlando Magic have set a new standard with the hiring of head coach Sean Sweeney. As the 16th head coach in franchise history, he is expected to elevate the Magic to new heights, including making a deep playoff run and potentially contending for an NBA Finals appearance.
During Media Day, Jalen Suggs spoke highly of Sweeney and their growing chemistry here's what he had to say:
Moving forward with a new coaching staff
Suggs said the Magic understand what happened over the past five years under coach Jamahl Mosley, but the team is focused on leaving that history behind outside of the relationships the players have built with each other.
With Sweeney and his staff bringing in a new system, Suggs said the players are focused on listening, understanding the details, and applying what they are learning on the court. He emphasized that the team cannot simply listen during meetings and film sessions before reverting to its old habits once practice begins.
Suggs believes the players need to trust the new system, stay focused to the details and give the coaching staff time to implement its vision. With everything being new for the team, he said the focus needs to remain on the future rather than what happened in previous seasons.
On his relationship with Sean Sweeney
It's bigger than basketball for Suggs and Sweeney.
Suggs said his relationship with Sweeney dates back to when he was a child playing basketball in Milwaukee. Sweeney had already developed a relationship with Suggs’ father and extended family before eventually becoming his coach in Orlando.
Suggs recalled visiting the Milwaukee Bucks' practice facility with his father and Sweeney when he was in fifth grade. He said it feels full circle that Sweeney’s first head coaching opportunity came with the Magic as Suggs enters his sixth NBA season.
Because he has known Sweeney for so long, Suggs said he feels confident in his ability to absorb the information and lessons Sweeney is bringing to the team. He has always viewed Sweeney as someone with extensive basketball knowledge and has appreciated the relationship they have maintained over the years.
Suggs said he is grateful they now have the opportunity to work toward a season together as coach and player.
Suggs said he has nothing but appreciation for former Magic coach Jamahl Mosley, who gave him an opportunity early in his career and helped him grow through some of the challenges they experienced together in Orlando. He wished Mosley continued success with the New Orleans Pelicans and in his future endeavors.
As for Sweeney, Suggs said the biggest areas of emphasis have been consistency and efficiency. He wants Suggs to become more consistent with his decisions, where he gets to on the floor and the habits he builds every day.
Suggs also said Sweeney has challenged him to find greater efficiency by avoiding the highs and lows that can come with trying to do too much. The goal is to develop a steadier approach that allows consistency and efficiency to build off each other.
Be Your Best Self
The final message from Sweeney has been for Suggs to remain himself.
r;"He's telling me is to be my best self," Suggs said. "Which is very important because I'm not trying to be anybody other than Jalen Suggs—not trying to be this point guard or that point guard, whether past, present, or future. This year I'm getting to tap back into my purest form of myself while growing in a sense of becoming more disciplined, factoring in more consistency on and off the court while finding more efficiency. I'm very excited to see how that all blends together."
Suggs said he isn't trying to replicate another point guard or become someone he isn't. Instead, he wants to return to the purest version of himself while becoming more disciplined, consistent and efficient both on and off the court.
