The Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics are tabbed to kick off the 2026-27 regular season with a 3 pm tip-off later today
Now that training camp and the preseason are finally in the books, the Detroit Pistons have the honor of hosting the very first regular season game of the 2026-27 campaign. A year ago, the Pistons earned the top seed in the East by a four-game margin over the Boston Celtics, and both squads are set to tip-off the NBA season at 3 pm inside Little Caesars Arena later this afternoon.
Heading into the game, the only lingering question mark for the Pistons is whether or not Taurean Prince will be ready to play. Prince is currently a game-time decision due to personal reasons, so it’s unclear whether the longtime vet will be part of Detroit’s starting lineup on opening day. In the event that Prince is not ready, the Pistons have prepared Elijah Harkless for an impromptu call-time just in case.
But well before the game tips off, the Pistons have organized a full pre-game itinerary that’s designed to occupy the Detroit fanbase for at least five hours before the contest begins. Starting at 10 am, the Little Caesars Arena Plaza will essentially serve as the meeting place and genesis of the day’s activities with a number of entertainment stations in the vicinity. An hour later, the Pistons will roll out a special blue carpet welcome for a few very special guests, such as NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas and longtime Detroit scorer Jerry Stackhouse. The present-day Pistons will also trickle in during this timeframe, so it’ll be an important time to welcome the squad into the building ahead of the season opener.
Once noon arrives, Arena Live is planning to shapesift into a full-fledged Opening Day Fall Fan Fest, which should pair some timely seasonal activities alongside everybody’s excitement for the beginning of the Pistons season. With face-painting, a petting zoo and donuts with apple cider setting an autumn-themed stage before the Pistons Academy skills contest, there should be a wide variety of activities that are engaging for all ages within the Detroit fanbase. The team store will also be open for business in case anyone needs to make a last-minute splurge for some extra Pistons apparel, so be on the lookout for special deals on fan gear tomorrow afternoon.
Once the LCA doors open up at 1:30 pm, there will be several turnstile giveaways that encourage fans to enter the arena early, use the Pistons mobile app and find their seats so that they can be eligible for prizes. The first 2,000 fans in the doors will wind up with team-issued Thunder Sticks, then the concessions will come with a 50% discount for those who use the team’s app to pick out their food and drink selections.
For those who find their seats prior to 2:55 pm, the Pistons have a few special giveaways in the works with autographed material among the gifts up for grabs. There will also be a special half-court shot with some significant cash on the line for one lucky fan, so the organization has put together a laundry list of reasons to show up to LCA ready for a competitive matchup between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.
Reverting back to the on-court part of the equation, the Pistons had a 3-1 edge over the Celtics last year, but that was the Jaylen Brown version of the team. This year, Brown has given way to Jayson Tatum and Paul George with Mitchell Robinson on track to factor into their rotation as well, so the Celtics have a different structure ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. But despite Boston’s roster turnover, Payton Pritchard and Derrick White are still slated to hold down the back court, so the Pistons have a tall-yet-manageable task on their hands later this afternoon.
