Taking a look at the top takeaways from the Houston Rockets' dominant 132-100 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Houston Rockets headed into Wednesday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks hoping to stay undefeated, and Houston was able to do just that as they dominated Milwaukee by a final score of 132-100, which enabled the Rockets to improve to 5-0.
With the Rockets being able to pick up the victory on Wednesday, let's take a look at the top takeaways from Houston's dominant performance.
Fred VanVleet and Amen Thompson Display Offensive Aggressiveness
Starting off, one of the more intriguing developments in this game was the fact that guards Fred VanVleet and Amen Thompson displayed offensive aggressiveness for Houston, which was a great sign for the Rockets.
On Wednesday, VanVleet finished with 24 points on 16 shots, and Thompson finished with 23 points on 16 shots, which demonstrated their willingness to be aggressive and take shots.
So far this season, VanVleet had been primarily operating as an offensive facilitator, but in this game, he took the shots he had and also created for others, while Thompson was also able to take the shots that were available, which led to a solid night for both players.
Moving forward, if VanVleet and Thompson continue to be aggressive, the Rockets could be in a great position offensively because Houston has the ability to get contributions from VanVleet, Thompson, and the rest of the starting lineup when it comes to scoring whcih makes it very difficult for opposing defenses to prepare for.
Clint Capela Provides Great Minutes Off the Bench
Next up is center Clint Capela providing great minutes off the bench as a solid presence on the interior.
On Wednesday night, the Rockets were without center Alperen Sengun, as he has been dealing with back soreness, and head coach Ime Udoka decided to hold him out, so Houston needed someone to step up at center, and Capela was able to do just that.
In this game, Capela came in off the bench and played 22 and had 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocks which was great production and was a great sign for the Rockets, especially if Sengun does miss more time.
As Houston continues to move forward this season, if Capela can provide solid minutes like this off the bench, the Rockets could end up having one of the better center rotations in the entire NBA when Sengun returns.
Bogdan Bogdanovic Outplays Reed Sheppard
Another takeaway from the bench was the fact that guard Bogdan Bogdanovic was able to outperform fellow guard Reed Sheppard.
Throughout the early part of the season, the Rockets are still figuring out the rotation and one of the biggest areas they still need to nail down is the guard minutes off the bench. So far, there have been good minutes from Bogdanovic and Sheppard, but on Wednesday, Bogdanovic was clearly the better player.
During the game on Wednesday, Bogdanovic had 16 points, four assists, and two steals on 5-for-6 shooting from the field and 4-for-5 from three, while Sheppard struggled, as he had seven points, four assists, and one steal on 2-for-9 from the field and 1-for-8 from beyond the arc. All that to say, Bogdanovic was significantly better than Sheppard, so it will be worth watching if that does change up the rotation at all.
So, as the Rockets progress, the performances of Bogdanovic and Sheppard will be very interesting to watch to see if Bogdanovic takes command of the reserve guard minutes, if Sheppard does, or potentially if they both contribute.
Kevin Durant Contributes on Both Ends of the Floor
The final takeaway on this list is the fact that forward Kevin Durant was able to contribute on both ends of the floor which was a great sight to see.
During the matchup with the Bucks on Wednesday, Durant tallied 18 points, five boards, four assists, and three blocks while shooting 5-for-9 from the field, 2-for-3 from three, and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Looking at Durant's performance, he was able to be efficient as a scorer from all over the floor which is no surprise, but he was also able to provide some playmaking and protected the rim pretty well which was indicated by his three blocks. While Durant is in the later part of his career, his play thus far this season proves he will do what it takes to win.
With that said, if Durant can continue to contribute in all areas on both offense and defense and stay healthy he could be one of the keys in helping the Rockets to have even a slight advantage against the top tier teams in the Western Conference.
