Even as the Boston Celtics are linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo, the San Antonio Spurs are poised to make a blockbuster trade with the Eastern Conference frontrunners.
Last offseason, the San Antonio Spurs were listed as frontrunners in the trade rumors for Giannis Antetokounmpo. This summer, Giannis has now been traded by the Bucks to the Heat.
All along, the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics seemed to be the two teams with the best chance of landing the Greek superstar. The Celtics could offer an impressive package centered on Jaylen Brown, keeping the Bucks in contention, and Miami could send over younger--albeit less talented--players and draft picks to help Milwaukee rebuild.
Now Boston has fallen short in the sweepstakes, so Brown could still be dealt to a different team. The Spurs seem to be the perfect landing spot.
Spurs Could Land Jaylen Brown
By all accounts, Brown's relationship with the Celtics has soured. He's always been option 1-B to Jayson Tatum, despite being slightly more durable and a Finals MVP.
Of course, in San Antonio, he would continue to play second fiddle to Victor Wembanyama, although for him, it could be worth it just for the change of scenery.
No matter what happens with Antetokounmpo, Brown might have played his last game in Boston.
"I am now speculating that if Jalen Brown doesn't get traded for Giannis, they may trade him somewhere else," revealed Brian Windhorst on ESPN. "So that is one of the things that emerged."
The Celtics are doing little to dispell that line of thinking.
"If you're a star in this league and if your name is involved in rumors, you want your front office to come out and say, 'By no means are we trading Jaylen Brown,'" added Jay Williams. "Nobody from the Boston Celtics has done that."
The Spurs need a defensive-minded forward who can playmake and handle the ball a bit. Brown is perhaps the best in the league at those areas of weakness, and the Spurs could land him, provided they are willing to part with either De'Aaron Fox, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, or Carter Bryant, or some combination of those players.
Of course, drfat picks would have to be included as well.
Last season, without Tatum, Brown averaged 28.7 points per game on 34.7 percent shooting from 3-point range. He led Boston to the second seed in the East and received MVP votes for the first time in his career.
It's a splashier move than the Spurs are expected to make, but from a basketball standpoint, it makes perfect sense.
