Fatigued Spurs Survive Jazz in Overtime

The San Antonio Spurs extended their first win streak of the season to three in a row, beating the Utah Jazz in overtime.

The San Antonio Spurs extended their winning streak to three in a row on Wednesday night, toppling the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City, 117-111 in overtime.

The Spurs came into Utah on the second night of a back-to-back after an easy win over the Sacramento Kings the night before. To kick off the game, the Spurs, simply put, looked fatigued. Several shots hit the front of the rim, missing, and the Jazz established an early double-digit lead.

With 12 ties and 12 lead changes, the Spurs had to put up a better fight than expected to beat Utah. The Jazz are a rising team in the Western Conference, but as long as Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen remain out, they have a way to go.

That's not to say that they're an easy team to beat, though.

Spurs Overcome Slow Start to Beat Jazz

In the back-and-forth game, both teams took every bucket they could find. Keyonte George, a known Spurs-killer, finished with 31 points on 11-of-27 shooting, leading the Jazz.

Second-overall pick Darryn Peterson overcame an early nose injury to finish with 18 points, a career-high. Peterson is expected to take over as the Jazz' franchise player sooner rather than later, and got his lick back on San Antonio. In the preseason, 42nd overall pick Ja'Kobi Gillespie outscored Peterson, although Gillespie did not play on Wednesday.

Interstingly, Peterson did not log a single overtime minute. Jazz fans will undoubtady look for an explanation from Will Hardy.

The Spurs, like Utah, were led by a young player of their own. As expected, Victor Wembanyama led the way with 13 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks. After posting nine dunks and zero made 3-pointers against the Kings, he had a more well-rounded offensive attack, settling into the midrange, playing well in the paint, and making four 3-pointers.

Every Spurs starter posted double-digit points, with De'Aaron Fox scoring 14, Stephon Castle with 12, Devin Vassell with 21, and Dylan Harper with 12. There are still some concerns surrounding the mostly undersized Spurs' starting five, although they seem to be settling in.

With a winning record, the Spurs will next play the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Frost Bank Center on Saturday night. Anthony Edwards will be out for the Wolves, although that won't be an easy game for the Spurs.
