The San Antonio Spurs won their fifth game in a row, beating the Utah Jazz on Monday night on the back of a well-rounded offensive attack.
The San Antonio Spurs cruised past the Utah Jazz on Monday night, winning 119-97. San Antonio got off to a hot start, winning the first quarter 27-16, before letting Utah get within a single point just minutes later.
To close out the first half and to open the second, though, the Spurs showed exactly why they're the best team in the NBA (and the Jazz are not) by extending the lead to as many as 26 points. The Spurs needed overtime to beat Utah last week, but seemed to learn from the close win, being all over Utah all game long.
The win marks the Spurs' fifth in a row, a mark they achieved five times last season. After a 0-2 start, San Antonio looks the part of a title threat, and their well-rounded attack just shows how deep and talented they are.
Spurs Topple Jazz in Team Effort
In the October 28 win over Utah, the Spurs were led by 36 points from Victor Wembanyama, with Devin Vassell heating up in the fourth quarter and overtime.
On Monday, no one got close to that 36-point mark, although seven players scored in double figures, led by Dylan Harper's points. For good measure, Keldon Johnson added 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench, having his best game of the young season so far. With all five starters scoring in double figures, Johnson showing some prowess off the bench, and the team as a whole shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, the Spurs' depth is clearly the most dangerous weapon in the entire NBA.
Solid two-way play from Julian Champagnie and Luke Kornet is just the icing on the cake.
In that overtime Spurs' win, Utah's head coach Will Hardy showed that he is not quite ready to trust second-overall pick Darryn Peterson. In that game, the rookie posted 18 points, a career-high, but did not log a single minute in overtime. On Monday, Peterson offered 14 points on only 38.5 percent shooting from the floor. He did manage to add six assists and three steals, though, saving what was otherwise a disappointing game.
As rookies like Darius Acuff Jr., Yaxel Lendeborg, and Caleb Wilson stuff the stat sheet early on in their careers, it's hard to shake the feeling that Peterson still has a long way to go compared to his peers. Maybe missing 11 games in college was more of a red flag than initially thought!
After the win, the Spurs--and the entire NBA--will have an off day on Tuesday, which is Election Day across all 50 states. The Spurs will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting the Dallas Mavericks.
