Victor Wembanyama Finally Returned to Form for Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs beat the Utah Jazz in overtime, and Victor Wembanyama was in his bag on both ends of the floor, showing off his offensive versatility without leaning too much into the 3-point shot.

The San Antonio Spurs won their first overtime game of the season, defeating the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night, 117-111. Victor Wembanyama led the game for the Spurs with 36 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks.

In the previous win against the Sacramento Kings, Wembanyama flushed home nine dunks and did not make a single 3-pointer, further proving that he is a traditional center first and a shot-maker second. Against Utah, the Jazz were able to flood the paint with the big bodies of Mo Bamba and Jaxson Hayes, limiting Wembanyama's impact directly at the rim.

He responded, though, with three mid-range jumpers and four 3-pointers, spacing the floor with ease. In an ideal world, of course, he would have relentlessly attacked the rim, but when the opportunity to sink some shots from 15 feet out presents itself, he isn't one to turn it down.

36 points and 14 rebounds would be a career-best stat line for most players, but for Wembanyama, it's all in a night's work. He got off to a slow start to the season against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets, but seems to have bounced back.

The Jazz, remember, are a rising power in the Western Conference and play physical basketball. Usually, that's a play style Wembanyama struggles against. On Tuesday, he looked calm and collected.

"He showed up in a big way for us tonight, and he played his game," offered Keldon Johnson. "But we were in a tough one tonight."

Over their last three wins, the Spurs have made it a priority to put Wembanyama in advantageous spots. It paid off, as Wembanyama's 3-pointers and mid-range shots were largely uncontested.

"I think it's a triangulation of harmony between him and understanding his spots and his environments to play out of, and then his teammates anticipating that and being able to deliver the basketball to him, and the staff continuing to help everybody play out of certain environments and give them feedback, positive, and teaching moments just to continue to clean stuff up," outlined Mitch Johnson.

The Spurs will return to San Antonio on Halloween night to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves, who will be without Anthony Edwards for several months. Still, expect that to be a tough game for the Spurs and Wemby.
