Green says one speech from Steve Kerr after the 0-3 start helped turn the Warriors' season around.
Two weeks ago, the Golden State Warriors were 0-3 and searching for answers, but after a 120-100 win over the Miami Heat at Chase Center on Thursday night, they have now won six straight games to sit at 6-3, and forward Draymond Green says the turnaround started with a message from coach Steve Kerr.
Changed the Mood
Golden State lost its first three games to the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns, and the third loss in Phoenix on Oct. 24 came on a night when Green and guard Stephen Curry both sat out.
Since then, the Warriors have beaten the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Suns and Heat, and Green pointed right back to the locker room after that 0-3 start as the spark.
"When we were 0-3, he came into the locker room and gave this speech as if we were 3-0," Green said in a clip shared by NBC Sports Bay Area after Thursday's win.
Green added that Kerr always seems to find the right words, even when nobody else feels the way the team should, and he said the speech got the group going right before the win in Denver.
He also said the team simply feels more confident now than it did before.
Curry has described the same moment too, telling ClutchPoints that Kerr talked after the Phoenix loss about sticking with the process and how proud he was of how hard the team was playing.
Kerr himself admitted Thursday that he felt the players were doubting themselves a little bit, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
What Green Brings Right Now
Green is barely scoring at 3.0 points per game, but he is handing out 7.0 assists and has been playing center with center Kristaps Porzingis away from the team.
He had two points and a season-high 11 assists against Miami, while Curry scored 29 points in 28 minutes and rookie forward Yaxel Lendeborg added 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
That is the role this team needs from Green, especially with a rookie like Lendeborg, who has looked like a real piece since the 31-point night in Denver that Green praised.
Green's passing keeps young players like him involved, and I would much rather see Green rack up assists than force shots, because that keeps everybody else on the floor sharp.
Why This Run Feels Real
I believe in this streak more than most early-season runs, because Golden State is winning without forward Jimmy Butler III, who is recovering from a torn right ACL, and guard Moses Moody, who is working back from a ruptured left patellar tendon.
Porzingis has now announced that he is stepping away from basketball to focus on his health, according to ESPN.
Even with that much talent missing, the team is still finding ways to win.
Kerr's speech did not win six games by itself, but it gave a worried team a reason to keep trusting what it was building.
Golden State sits seventh in the Western Conference and hosts the Orlando Magic on Saturday before closing its homestand against the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday.
