The Golden State Warriors came away with the victory on the front end of their impromptu back-to-back against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday, but it wasn't without some injury hiccups.
Steph Curry was initially fine for Saturday's original game time, but popped up on the injury report for Sunday's postponed game with right knee soreness. Though he ended up playing a full 28 minutes and scoring 26 points in the blowout 111-85 win, the attention turned towards if Curry's knee would be good to go for a second night in a row.
However, Curry was just ruled out due to the right knee soreness, meaning the Warriors will have to try to snatch another win from the Timberwolves at Target Center without their main source of offense. It'll be the first game without Curry since Jimmy Butler went down with his ACL tear a week ago.
After the win on Sunday, Curry was asked in his postgame press conference if he'd be able to play in the second game of the back-to-back, and gave a hopeful response that evidently did not come true with today's injury report.
"If everything goes well, yeah (I'll hopefully be able to play), with recovery and all of that. 28 minutes weren't crazy, so hopefully it'll respond well."
Curry elaborated on what the issue specifically was, as well.
"Something flared up yesterday when we came over to get a workout in. It was super weird, I've had stuff going with quads and whatnot, but it was something that I haven't felt before, so I definitely took advantage of the day off to get right. Hopefully, that continues.
Especially with Curry's age and the fragility of this roster as it stands without Butler, the Warriors are sure to take more precautions with his health than normal.
In addition to Curry, Draymond Green and Al Horford will also be out, meaning the young players will have to lead the way. De'Anthony Melton and Jonathan Kuminga will also be missing the game, so even some of their primary younger players will not get to let loose.
Players like Brandin Podziemski and Moses Moody will likely get all they can eat. Pat Spencer will almost surely see time as the backup point guard with both Curry and Melton out, so he may slide back into the shorthanded hero role he took earlier this season when Curry was out for an extended period.
From the forward spots, Gui Santos, Will Richard, and Buddy Hield will likely absorb most of those minutes, though it may be time we finally see G-Leaguer Malevy Leons in some real minutes. The Warriors acquired him from the Oklahoma City Blue earlier this season, and he's been seeing success with the Santa Cruz Warriors since.
It's no doubt going to be a difficult task, but capturing such a dominant win yesterday already made this leg of the road trip somewhat of a success. Now, it's about seeing which of these young players are ready to turn up when given the opportunity.
