The extension is not signed yet, and Curry keeps explaining, in the most relaxed way possible, why that should not worry anyone.
Stephen Curry has heard every version of the question this summer, about the unsigned extension, the final year of his contract and what it all might mean, and the Golden State Warriors guard keeps giving the same easy answer.
Nothing about his future feels unsettled to him, because in his mind there is no future that involves another uniform.
The paperwork can wait, because the intention, he says, was never in doubt.
What Curry Actually Said
Speaking with NBC Sports Bay Area at his annual charity golf event, Curry left no room for interpretation.
"There's no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I'm pretty sure that's going to happen," Curry said in the exclusive interview.
He went on to say the contract will get done at the right time and that the team will not let the situation distract from preparing for the season.
Curry is 38, he is under contract through this season at $62.6 million, the largest salary in the league, and he has been eligible since late August to sign an extension that can run two years and $136.7 million at most under the league's rules for players his age.
The front office has handled the talks with the same patience, and general manager Mike Dunleavy has expressed the same confidence about where this ends up.
The Money
The money still shapes everything around him.
In ESPN's new future power rankings, which slot Golden State 19th, Bobby Marks points out the Warriors could have over $100 million in cap space next summer, a number that likely shrinks by roughly half once Curry signs his new deal.
The same outlet projects the Warriors as the oldest team in the league this season, coming off a 37-45 year in which injuries limited Curry to 43 games even while he averaged 26.6 points.
So the size and timing of his next contract is not a small detail, since it decides how much help the front office can buy for the seasons the deal covers.
None of this is unique to Golden State, because every franchise with an aging superstar eventually plays the same waiting game, but few of them get to play it with this little drama attached.
A Lifer in Every Sense
None of that changes the only thing fans really wanted to know, which is whether the greatest player in franchise history plans on finishing somewhere else, and he has now answered it about as directly as an athlete can.
Curry sounds excited about the season in front of him, the roster brings back plenty of familiar faces, and training camp opens September 29.
The deal will come, this year or next summer, and the jersey will not change.
That certainty is worth more than it sounds, because a team that knows exactly who its star is can plan three moves ahead while everyone else is still guessing.
There are very few certainties left in Golden State's future, but the man responsible for most of its past just confirmed the biggest one.
