The Golden State Warriors' long spiral over the past two months has finally culminated in their worst playoff positioning in a while. At 33-36 on the season, the Warriors have finally slipped all the way to the 10th seed in the Western Conference, falling half a game behind the Portland Trail Blazers.
In the two months since Jimmy Butler went down with a torn ACL, the Warriors have been an abysmal 8-17. Since Steph Curry last played on January 30th, the Warriors are 6-13. Both records are more reminiscent of a lottery team that would eventually start tanking at the end of the season, but the Warriors are instead stuck in the Play-In Tournament as a top 10 seed.
Steve Kerr Accepts Harsh Truth Of Warriors' Fate
After the Warriors lost to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, Steve Kerr discussed the Warriors' Play-In fate and accepted what's to come for his team.
"We've had our eyes on the 6-seed for a while now, and that's out of the question now. We're not getting there. If we can string together some wins, try to get to the 8-seed, that'd be ideal. Get two cracks at it. We're not getting to the 7-seed, we know that."
Kerr talked about what his players need to focus on in the coming weeks as they shift their goals and prepare for the Play-In.
"I've been talking about this theme, not in such precise words like I just used, but over the last few weeks, I've been telling the guys we have to build our habits and be ready for when we get guys healthy again. Because then we can just really have the firepower that can be complimented by a foundation of good habits, good fundamentals. There's a lot of stuff we can improve upon. At the base of all that is your spirit, energy, confidence. We got to work on that, too."
Warriors Need To Finish March Strong
With just under 2 weeks left in March, this might be one of the most important stretches of the Warriors' season. Recent reports indicated that there is 'cautious optimism' that Steph Curry may return within that time frame, but even if it's not until the Warriors get back to Chase Center in the middle of the week, that would be the perfect opportunity to generate some momentum.
Right now, the Warriors are staring down the barrel of the back of their six-game road trip. A back-to-back against the No. 1 seed Pistons and the No. 8 seed Hawks is on deck on Friday and Saturday, then a matchup in Dallas against the Mavericks concludes the road trip. Though the Pistons game is difficult and the Hawks actually have a significantly better record than the Warriors, despite partially selling at the trade deadline, there's still a chance the Warriors can eke out two of these three wins.
Then, if Curry can come back at that time, the Warriors are blessed with home games against the Brooklyn Nets and the Washington Wizards — two NBA bottom-feeders that should be good games to act as springboards for momentum heading into the final month of the regular season.
