In the aftermath of Moses Moody's disastrous knee injury he suffered on Monday night, conversations will be had about what the Golden State Warriors can do the rest of the season.
With 10 games left on the Warriors' schedule, they sit at 34-38 in 10th in the Western Conference, 1.5 games behind the Trail Blazers for 9th and 2.0 games behind the Clippers for 8th. They're essentially guaranteed to finish in the top 10, with the Pelicans 9 games behind in 11th, meaning they're headed for the Play-In.
However, because of Moody's injury and the general lack of recent success, both on the court and on the injury report, many people may be wondering if Steph Curry, among other Warriors' veterans, being held out for the rest of the season could be on the table.
Steve Kerr Says Curry Will Play If He Is Able
Curry has now missed the last 22 games due to a lingering knee issue that started as runner's knee and has since included bone bruising and general swelling. It's been reported that Curry was aiming for a return by the end of March and that he wants to play as soon as he can, but Moody's injury throws expectations for the rest of the season into flux.
Steve Kerr spoke on the idea that Curry may not play when he is able.
"We’re not chasing a play-in berth. We are squarely in the play-in no matter what we do. Bottom line, if Steph is healthy, he’s going to play because that’s what we’re here for. The chance to get into the playoffs is a big deal for us, big deal for Steph."
It's a pretty strong statement, though it did come ahead of Moody's injury, the main reason why these discussions are opening back up again. Ultimately, it comes down to differing perspectives: Does one think the Warriors still have enough of a chance to get through the Play-In and make some noise in the playoffs to risk bringing back Curry this season, considering Moody's new status and any other injuries they may bring into the postseason?
Curry Sure To Make Noise In Play-In If Available
While this may or may not become a valid discussion if it's a foregone conclusion that Curry will be returning soon once he's fully healthy, one thing is for certain. If Curry plays in the Play-in, he's going to put on a show.
In four career games in the Play-In — two games in 2021, one game in 2024, and one game last year — Curry has been excellent, despite a 1-3 record.
In 2021 against the Lakers and Grizzlies, Curry dropped 37 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, and 39 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists, respectively. He had a 70% true shooting percentage in the first game and a 63% true shooting percentage in the second game, and a relatively weak supporting cast, pushed both games to the final moments.
In 2024, though the Warriors were manhandled by the Kings, Curry still had 22 points on 64% true shooting, and last year, Curry and Butler went dynamite, with the two-time MVP pouring in 38 points to nab his first Play-In victory.
If the standings hold as they are now, the Warriors would play the Trail Blazers, who Curry has historically torched in his career, and the Clippers, another team that has been on the receiving end of a few magical Curry games.
