Steve Kerr called Draymond Green the 'best defensive player' ever.

As the Golden State Warriors' offseason continues, fans anxiously await a decision on Steve Kerr's role as coach.

However, with this uncertainty and relative lack of success in recent years, some may also forget just how dominant the Warriors were at their peak, and how they can still contend to this day.

In his most recent interview, Kerr made sure to remind people of that, particularly honing in on one of the Warriors' franchise legends: Draymond Green.

Kerr Calls Green The 'Best Defensive Player' Ever

In Kerr's recent interview with The New Yorker, he gave Green the biggest possible compliment.

"He's the best defensive player I've ever seen. And that's saying a lot, given that I played with Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. The modern game demands so much more than it did in the nineties. You have to be able to guard all five positions, because there's so much pace and energy and crossmatches. You race back on defense, you've got to guard the guy in front of you. And then there's the "pick-on" game: the opposing team is going to bring the weakest defender into every pick-and-roll to gain an advantage. Draymond, he can guard any action, any position, any player. And he can also blow up the play behind the play if he's not involved in the action because of his brain, his speed, his reach."

Not only has Kerr played alongside Pippen and Rodman, two of the players often on the short list for best defender of all time, but he's also experienced first-hand most of the other main contenders for that title: Hakeem Olajuwon, Rudy Gobert, Ben Wallace, and more.

The fact that Kerr is still so confident in Green's status as the best defender ever is a testament to just how dominant Green is in that aspect of the game.

Green's Upcoming Contract Decision Hinges On Kerr

Right now, Kerr's decision to remain the coach of the Warriors or not will affect a lot more than just his own employment status.

Kerr is a major factor in whether Green accepts his player option this summer and remains with the Warriors or takes a different route by declining it. NBA reporter Marc Stein elaborated on this on Sunday.

"Remember that Draymond Green recently shared on his podcast … that he does not expect Kerr to return and is likewise unsure if the team wants to retain him. Although, it is believed that Green, 36, will be presented with the concept of declining his $27.7 million player option for next season to sign a longer-term extension at a lower annual salary."

There are essentially four options that Green and the Warriors can take this summer. Two options are obvious: Green can accept the option and remain in Golden State, or he can decline the option and leave for another team. The third option is mentioned by Stein, declining the option to essentially restructure his contract, adding more years and likely taking less money.

The final option could be to opt into the contract and allow the Warriors to use him in a trade, easier matching incoming salary.

It's a tricky situation for Green as he likely doesn't even know if he wants to stay since Kerr's role is still up in the air, but no matter what, the legacy he's created in Golden State is cemented forever.
